I recently received the latest bumf from the Spitalfields Festival in London this summer. A number of familiar names leapt out at me and wrote themselves in my diary e.g. Fretwork, Gabrieli Consort, Catherine Bott, (you can easily work out my musical preferences) but I also noticed that on the 16th June would be the following: "fORCH, in an improvisational programme alongside Mark Knoop and Carl Rosman performing a Richard Barrett world premiere."
Now, these words "world" and "premiere" in such close proximity do normally tend to make me walk off in the opposite direction, but since I recognise two of the three names in that announcement, I have put that concert in my diary as well; I would very much appreciate, however, some idea of what I should expect to hear that evening ... it really is time I dug myself out of the 18/19th century .....

I can promise you that all three of those three names are well worth listening to. You should expect ... well I'm not sure what they'll be doing, but I can assure you that it'll be worth listening to.

Yes, we know a few of these names... should be a good messageboard turn-out for this concert

should be a good messageboard turn-out for this concert You mean on stage or in the audience??? Mariandel, what should you expect? two things: (a) Carl and Mark playing a piece for clarinet in A and piano entitled Flechtwerk which I wrote for them last year. I suppose the most striking thing about it is the way the music tries to fuse these two different instruments into a single "symbiotic" one ("Flechte" means "lichen" in German); the clarinet part in particular stretches the technique of the instrument in some new directions. (b) fORCH, here making its UK debut, is an ensemble I originally put together in 2005 at the request of Reinhard Kager of the SWR (South West German Radio) for this station's so-called "New Jazz Meeting" (I say "so-called" because the music basically has nothing to do with jazz), and consists of seven leading improvising musicians plus myself, for whom I'll be writing a composition which acts basically as a starting-point and context for improvisatory playing. The lineup for the 16 June concert is Phil Minton & Ute Wassermann (voices), Peter Evans (trumpet), Paul Lovens (percussion), Wolfgang Mitterer (piano), Aleksander Kolkowski (Strohviola), RB & Paul Obermayer (live electronics).

Ahem. Pardon the intrusion but this is exactly one week from today. (Warning: blurb follows) Saturday 16 June Shoreditch Church, London 8.30pm
Flechtwerk (2006) performed by Carl Rosman (clarinet) and Mark Knoop (piano)
fOKT 4 (2007) performed by fORCH: Phil Minton & Ute Wassermann (voices), Peter Evans (trumpets), Paul Lovens (percussion), Wolfgang Mitterer (piano), Aleksander Kolkowski (Strohviola), Richard Barrett & Paul Obermayer (electronics)
This concert includes the premiere of a new work for clarinet and piano written for these two extraordinary musicians, and the first appearance in the UK of an ensemble formed by Richard Barrett in 2005, which brings together eight instrumental, vocal and electronic improvisers from the UK, USA, Germany and Austria to create a new kind of "orchestra" which crosses the boundary between acoustic and electronic sound from both directions. The concert is also the occasion for the launch of fORCH's new double CD spin networks (Psi Records). More information: www.spitalfieldsfestival.org.ukBox office: 020 7377 1362

Shoreditch Church. Shoreditch High Street London, E1 6JN. Must be a short street because they don't bother with a number like 10 Downing Street does. Here's what the church looks like from a human's eye view (what other view do you need?!):

The trick is NOT to confuse it with the other Spitalfields Festival venue, Christchurch Spitalfields. NOT THIS ONE
