Well, on the date in question I will get on the bus Monday January 21st 2008 at 08.11 and get off at 08.20

How that is of interest to anyone is beyond me.

Before I log off, can all those folks who have given such a warm welcome to Matthew explain why?

Being dim, but what does this has to do with music?  When you purchased something at Scummerfields

I know I am being ultra dim, but I am sure the enthusiastic Mods will advise

Thing is, Anty, how do we know what it's about yet? Matthew hasn't said what he would do with the data he's asking for. Sometimes, ya just gotta trust in composers.  Roll Eyes Grin

  A warm welcome, Matthew.   Smiley

Happenings!   Grin  - cor, you instantly reminded me of shenanigans at the Edinburgh Festival, mid 60s.      Even nude intrusions at the staid Book Festival.   As David Niven said at another location,  "So many people willing to display their shortcomings."

My warm welcome for Matthew's project would be extended similarly to any other new projects which cause us to reflect on what we do in our daily lives, and to look for instances where there might be elements of "art" in our own lives (rather than merely being the passive consumers of "art" created by others).  Smiley

Until MLK's project is completed, it's hard to say what the results will be, of course.  But isn't it worth keeping an open mind and little curiosity?  Who is hurt or affronted, if the project bombs?  Has funding gone down the drain that might have paid for a String Trio to play for an hour in Droitwich?   Wink

Yeh, maybe, but that time I board and the time I leave the bus, or the supermarket is supremely boring to me, let alone anyone else isn't it?  Unless you would like to say why it isn't?

It seems to me that boarding the bus, doing the thing in the supermarket etc. is only the first pahse of the project. And actually, if I were to do those things knowing it was potentially part of an artistic 'idea', they'd be far less boring than usual.
Perhaps Matthew will say something more about what he intends, or maybe it's important that participants not know at this stage?
But I agree with Reiner: the whole idea of performance art, radical music theatre, 'happenings' etc. is due for some fresh thinking.

Indeed, Frank Zappa took the words out of my mouth.

Well Anna, it will sound like b*ll*ocks to some for sure  Cheesy but note Matthew does say >These events are pieces of music...or art....<

so it's not necessarily intended to be music. I've said my piece on here before about Cage and his noise, or lack of it, being art not music but as you can see there is some enthusiasm about the project here.

It's something that maybe Radio 3 will take an interest in, and this place is the R3 (alternative) boards so let's wait for the the thing to happen and then laugh our b*ll*cks off, or applaud.

I quite often compose stuff in my head when I'm washing up or sitting on the toilet but I never remember it after and it doesn't get written down  Sad

Erm, that wouldn't count; see:

Hi Matthew, good to see you found your way here. I didn't see you at the Sally Army tonight, (Vermilion: Fanfares, Songs and Other Things). You missed a delightful evening. Wink

...here are the actual events[/color]

Event one BUS Monday January 21st 2008
On the prescribed day you should board any bus, at any time.
The length of your journey should not be premeditated.
When you are ready, alight the bus.
You should record the times you boarded & alighted the bus.

Event two ROAD Tuesday January 22nd [/u]
On the prescribed day, walk down any road.
You should clap your hands together once, at any point.
You may walk at any pace, but must record the name of the road & the duration of how long you walked for.
It is at your discretion to how long you walk for (at the end of the road, you could turn around & walk back.)

Event three BUILDING Wednesday January 23rd
On the prescribed day you should enter any building.
Discover the building for a duration of up to one hour.
Sit down at least once & close your eyes.
You should record the time you entered & left the building.

Event four SUPERMARKET Thursday January 24th
On the prescribed day you should enter any supermarket.
Walk down every isle at your own pace.
On your way round you must pick up any item for less then £1
Go back to your original starting place, in the supermarket.
Before paying for your item you must move one other item in the store to another place, an incongruous position on another shelf.
Pay for your item & keep your receipt.
You may not own the bought item, it must be given away or thrown into a bin.

Event five PUB Friday January 25th
On the prescribed day you should enter any pub & ask one person any question you wish.
You should request a glass of water, you should not drink it.
Leave the pub.
You should record the time you entered & left the pub.

Event six PARK Sunday January 27th
On the prescribed day you should enter any park
Sit or stand on a green area for any length of time
You should look up to the sky at least once.
You should record the time you entered & left the park.

Hi Matthew - welcome.

a) Are these events supposed to constitute a "solo performance" for each participant? If so, why must they be performed by each person on a specified date?

b) If, alternatively, they are part of some kind of "ensemble", how are the individuals supposed to work together (other than telepathically believing that unspecified others might be doing similar activities somewhere else on the same date)?

With regard to a), what is the purpose for each individual?

Concerning b), what are the ground rules and the ensemble experience that participants should be expecting?

Where's the music in all this? Are participants supposed to record the sounds made/heard during each event?

Seems to me rather a naive question from our Administrator here! Whoever mentioned anything about MUSIC?

I can't see how any of this is music. When I did some support teaching in primary schools I did exactly this sort of exercise with infants. We sat in silence for a minute and jotted down (in picture form if they couldn't write) anything they heard during that time... with gaps as the time moved across the page - eg a chair scraping, a cough, a bird, people talking outside... then we made SOUNDS ( not really music) to make a sort of picture of the time passed.

I can't see how you can say that YOU are composing something here Matthew, you are just sort of sitting somewhere and saying ... go and do things ... music?Huh?

John Paynter comes to mind in ' Sound and Silence' too, a very 'fashionable'  book in education in the '60s.
Sorry Matthew, welcome , but you have lost me here, I can't see any relevance whatsoever to your music degree or our musicianship... 'Emperor's New Clothes' also comes to mind.

Come on chaps this can't be real?HuhHuh?
