Well, now we've seen what an emasculated, anodyne excuse for a board remains in the other place, it's time to thank Michael all over again for his thoughtfulness and perspicacity in setting up this new home so that we could all migrate and enjoy a virtually uninterrupted continuation of the status quo. What sort of state we'd otherwise all be in by now nearing the end of the first day of the NKB (Nanny Knows Best) board hardly bears thinking about...

Michael, you are a scholar, a gentleman and a saviour.

Many, many thanks.

Seconded! I don't quite know why I persist in visiting the Other Side from time to time. Probably just so the people who for some reason haven't made it over here don't feel forsaken. And to archive a couple of threads. But certainly going over there and seeing all our words wiped away (yes, I know we can still get to them if we climb in the back window) was pretty dismal this afternoon.

Must disagree with Ron on one thing though. This is very considerably better than the status quo ante.

Yes, Oz, you're right: this is far better than what we had before - even for those of us who are barely seduced by the explosion of smileys.

Echoed!

The BBC boards are an emasculated shadow of their former selves. Moreover, a lot of the contributors seem to delight in some very petty squabbling in what I guess they think is a suitably public forum. It all seems far more civilised here.

Many thanks!

Seconded! I don't quite know why I persist in visiting the Other Side from time to time.

When the Today board closed, I looked in quite a few times, but did not like the choice of discussions. I did look at a few threads, some of which were running into hundreds so I assume they must have veered off topic into many side issues, but as I cannot scroll through, glancing at text, I quickly gave up.

(I'll just whisper this while knocking on some wood, but even so: does anyone else have the impression that most of the nice people have come over here while most of the less nice people have stayed over there? Not to generalise or anything - but the percentage of squabbling to useful posting over there seems higher than it's even been now that the old boards have been packed up in the shed out the back.)

Thanks Ollie, helping to remind me of the zoom button  Wink

I suppose it's because there's something to squabble about over there!

I can't help feeling that it's rather like watching lesser carrion squabbling over scraps once the big cats have dragged the lions' share elsewhere...

Yes, although this is my first post (anywhere, ever!) I too would like to thank Michael for this board. This community contains a richness of knowledge and humour and characters that I feel privileged to have encountered. There have been some really extraordinarily funny moments with one or two posters able to take my breath away at moments with their stylish humour.

I hope I'm not being too brash if I also mention in passing that the kissing smiley on this board always seems to me as if it is being slightly sarcastic, a bit like a mobster blowing a kiss to the detective out of the back window of his expensive chauffeur-driven car as he is driven off after a failed trial to convict him. It still makes me smile though which is I suppose what smileys are supposed to do. Another thing that made me laugh out loud was the spate of 40 letter thread titles in response to Mumblesford's merciless sloganing of the Bach-is-great-Mozart-isn't message back on 'another' board some while ago. It was a riotous festival of naughtiness which was to my jaded senses and hopelessly immature (forty something) appetite a fairly undiluted joy.
I hope I haven't been too forward in my first message but I don't think I'll be posting much as I really don't have a lot of worthwhile things to say and I wanted to fit these thoughts in whilst I did, but reading this board and the one from whose skirts it sprang, has given me a great deal of joy, education and means of spending money. So thankyou.

I'm a piano teacher by the way, a bit battered and with a slightly dodgy right hand, but there you are.

Best

Welcome Daniel! Sounds as if you could provide a few thigh-slapping moments yourself, so do post as and when.  Grin

Daniel,

Welcome to the life-boat. We can watch from a safe distance as the Titanic of the R3 music board meets the iceberg of corporate fundamentalism.

Physical dodginess is irrelevant here, so don't even give it a second thought!
