Something of a feeding frenzy from a cross-section of the usual suspects on another 20th C. composer, (with a just a tad of support from a more reasonable contingent....)

I usually try to avoid such spats, but having not participated much recently (due to a substantial move and temporary absence of broadband till this week) I did offer my twopenn'orth in praise of Messiaen. Some people just want sweet, unchallenging tunes, but I suppose we should be glad that they do still form part of the community of listeners to R3.

Out of the lion came forth sweetness.

Well said, Stanley.

Martin,

Good to see you back again, and praise is due not only for your defence of the composer but also your patience with some of the usual suspects. I'm afraid that I can no longer see such good in some of them as you, and that, like Stanley, I've identified a wee bunch of malcontents who may profess to hate discord in music but positively thrive on it on the boards. Great thread there, particularly seeing ol' Lord Byron getting in with his opera fans' dating site. Hasn't the poor bloke met ANYONE yet worth actually dating?

Hmmm. There is the small matter of whether that feeling is reciprocated ... Anyway, he's saving himself for Janine.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

A naive and sentimental pilgrim careening uncertainly through life's bagatelle board writes:

What exactly is 'dating'? Can you tell whether you are doing it or not at any given time? Will I ever have done it? Presumably getting out a Carbon-14 testing kit and asking one's companion for a sample neither comes into it nor would be a good move.

But what are the criteria that distinguish a date from a not-date? Do both (or possibly all) parties have to agree in advance on whether something is a date or not? I haven't needed to know about any of this for the past thirty five years or so and feel in need of a brief refresher course.  Undecided

I don't think I've ever in my life used the word "date" in reference to any event I have ever attended.  I find it slightly cringeworthy I have to admit.  I've generally progressed somehow from meeting people with others present to meeting them without others present, onward to being in a relationship, without ever having to use the D word or discuss the current status between us.  Smiley

George, I believe that the dating process is noted for it being permissable for consenting adults to consume custard. This may account for 'dating' being a popular activity. Unless you are a Lacto-Ova Vegetarian ...

Custard? custard?! Listen not to such crude advice George and worry not about names, just make it to the nearest "bike shed"and decide on the appropriate nomenclature at a later date.- Don't forget your cycle clips.

I'm not sure Wiki knocks this one into touch, but...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dating

It seems it's all in the mind of the dater/datee.
