Well, I just listened to Feedback on Radio 4 and there were exactly 40 seconds in the programme about the new Radio 3 schedule. Imagine: 40 seconds! Isn't it great? Cheesy

Even greater news is that Roger Wright has agreed to come to the programme in two weeks time, on March the 9th, to answer questions by listeners. So please go to the website and ask your questions to dear old Roger:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/feedback.shtml

And no: not a single word was said about the Radio 3 Message Board. Undecided

Have a nice weekend everybody! Wink

At least he has the decency to appear on the programme. BBC Radio 2 Controller Lesley Douglas, is always "too busy". Yeah, I bet she is, out boozing with Chris Evans, Danny Baker and Russell Brand, hence why she sends her Spin Doctor David Barber onto the programme to feed us a lorryload of lies and spin.

You had better have some firm answers, Mr. Wright.  Angry

In today's episode of Feedback, the upcoming visit of Richard Wright to the programme wasn't even mentioned. I think they have already enough questions and comments by listeners! Grin

Well, did anyone listen (again)? Praised himself lots about about the Breakfast Crew - well, fair dos, Rob is a good presenter, shame about the 'do let us know what you like' stuff, but all in all it's enjoyable. But the major evasion was not about the loss of real live broadcasting - yes, we know there's less money, truly live broadcasting is expensive (point in my post to Feedback - it's all about money, why not just be honest and admit it) - but the bluddy 7pm start time and the consequent loss of utility to most listeners. There have been brickbats and bouquets for The Breakfast Crew on the MBs, but you can't please everybody - especially if everybody is called Carol Kohll; But I have yet to see a single favourable comment about the 7pm start - except from dear wilf, who lives in Vienna, where the concert starts at 8pm q;o). And the early start has no interval talk, which is pushed off to 11pm after half-an-hour's rag-bag misleadingly entitled 'Artist Focus'.

But what did you expect Rog to say? 'Yes, sorry, it's all been a complete fcuk-up, I'll change it all back?!' When have you ever heard anyone in authority who's made a shite decision, apologise for it afterwards?

Entirely predictable outcome; I'm glad I missed it.

I have yet to listen to the programme, but were you pleased with Roger's answers?

This is a repeat of something I posted in another place....but why not Smiley

I thought the feeblest part of Roger Wright's performance this afternoon was his defence of axing live relays of concerts.

It seemed to come down to:

(a) Don't worry, you will still be able to hear people coughing. We won't doctor the tapes.

(b) If we broadcast concerts live the presenters' introductions might become out of date on re-broadcasts if some of the performers had died or won an award in the interim. (You could always edit them, Roger, for the later occasions if you really wanted to. I believe the technology does now exist for doing this. Have a word with one of your technical chappies)

He appeared (can this really be so?) to have no understanding at all of why 'live as live' relays of concerts are so valued and why they have been seen as central to R3/The Third Programme throughout its history - until the Monday before last that is when it suddenly turned out they were unimportant.

I'm beginning to find this aspect the most dispiriting part of the changes, not least because once the live broadcast tradition has been thrown away it will be difficult to restore it. It's the casualness of the way that something vital and important has been discarded that gets me. It turns out, according to RW anyway, there wasn't a reason after all. (If it was money, why didn't he say it was money?)

Yes - I scribbled something on the other side as well.

You'd think that there would have been a shower of reactions both there and here. I am very surprised by how little there has been.

I don't think that anyone was surprised by RW's weasel words DracoM, hence the lack of reaction.

[Also at bbc boards]

The most worrying thing for me about the interview was Roger Wright's attitude towards any of the criticsm.

It was all 'Yes but'.

Yes, but I have a big postbag that means more people are happy than those who are not.

Yes, but I'm only responding to requests I've had earlier.

etc.

I would be looking for something more from a 'leader' of an organisation - he should be striving to make more and more people happy, and find a way where he can keep his happy postbag people happy AND turn some disenters around.

An important early stage in winning people around is to demonstrate that you do understand their concerns and that you are listening to them.  I got none of that from RW.  I don't believe he understands the psychological aspects of live broadcasts, or anything about his listeners daily lives.  He mentoned nothing of any research he has done to show why these changes are the right ones, and why they are good for the majority of R3 listeners.

I do appreciate that a leader does sometimes have to make hard decisions and alienate / upset some people  (RW may feel like he has done this).  But his management of the change is completely inept.

RW really needs to demonstrate what the 'strategy' for R3 is.  He said it had stayed the same, but his description seemed based on an extremely narrow definition of strategy.

I think we need to know

a) what his vision for R3 is.  This needs to be made in terms of
a1.  audience description - who, what they do, when they listen, how R3 is part of their lives etc.
a2.  what R3 means for each of the performance arts - how R3 and the arts support eachother,
a3.  how R3 fits in with and integrates with other BBC channels/operations

b) how he is going to change the current set up to move towards that vision.

R3 management should act openly.  At the moment, everything is hidden.

I did not listen to this programme having found, over the years, that Feedback is a rather weak programme.  What it needs is total and absolute independence from any organisation or person that is involved as a guest in the programme and a couple of interviewers some ten times more persistent than Paxman.
Cheers

The most telling moment was the phrase "I don't acknowledge what this listener has said".

Not "I don't agree with it", or "this is not the view of the majority of listeners", but "I don't acknowledge what this listener has said".

In other words, RW does whatever he wants. And he is ready to ride roughshod over any feedback from disgruntled listeners who don't like what has been done.

I think the new R3 motto should probably something along the lines of

"Resistance is futile".

That is indeed a most revealing phrase, and one of someone who does not listen to other people. Unfortunately, such a person is frequently found in management positions.

I could not agree more. This is the heart of the matter. Without real live broadcasts R3 will become less and less an integral part of the UK musical culture. It will degenerate into just another station playing CD's.

It's our licence fee. What are we going to do about it.?
