i didtn understand your reservations re buthcer and nakamura richard. i can imagine the no input stuff is a bit random and non-structured for your tastes HuhHuh??

I'm not a big fan of the no input stuff, it's not flexible enough for my liking, although that wasn't my main problem, which was that I didn't feel the two of them added anything to each other's playing, instead somehow detracting from one another. As for random and non-stuctured, I felt the structure was if anything too obvious: the continuous electronic sounds generally stayed within a very limited range, while JB every now and again stopped what he was doing and moved on to the next thing. If he'd been playing solo or in a more "supportive" kind of musical environment his playing could have had more of a sense of unfolding. I didn't dislike the music as such though, I just felt there was something missing.

I kinda thought that Butcher was 'presenting' a series of, like, vignettes almost, of his .... er 'tricks' -
I more or less mentioned this in the LMC porno thread...

As for Urban Bushmen AEOC mentioned back in this thread, it's funny, cos that's the exact LP that marked the point at which I began to give up on the Art Ensemble, it was sounding way too slick & jazzy & commercial ... (for them, I mean)

Partly due no doubt to the celebrated ECM 'production', but those grooves were gettin a bit mainstream, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION...
..time for another listen, maybe, as you say.

EXCEPT I sold the goddam record years ago.

(anybody know of a quick & easy dodgy download of it, "stricktly for 'study purposes'" like? ahem

gotta go.

I've just put on my battered CD1 of Urban Bushmen, and mighty fine it is!

There is the even finer, more obscure Eda Wobu, here, with some other concert links in the comments. In Eda Wobu I really do think that you can hear some of the origins of Braxton's GTM. On the same blog there is a lot of Braxton, including recent performances of Composition no. 356 from Chiasso earlier this year, and Composition no. 92.

You mean here? Am I being stupid or is there no download link there?

You need to click on the titles to get to the comments, like this.

I hope this one works out, if not;

I meant the Braxton Composition 356 though.

Having trouble hearing anything?

Listen to this instead -- the Brötzmann tarogato solo from Alms/Tiergarten (Spree).

More for the sound of the instrument and the nice way it 'dissolves' into the texture toward the end, than for the artistry of the soloist, considerable though that is, of course.

Narrow expressive range? I can't comment, having not perceived the edges of it yet.

Very nice indeed, thanks. I don't know how it is that I don't have those CDs.

OK, that is here.

Or;

http://inconstantsol.blogspot.com/2008/05/anthony-braxton-septet-composition-364.html

I mistakenly heard it first as 364, but was corrected later. It is quite different to the version of 356 in the Iridum set. I'd be very interested in your response, Richard.

Yes, and it's getting me to make some resolutions too.

(More when I've educated myself.)

May I also mention the 2002 concert from Musica Elettronica Viva, one of my favourite finds so far this year?

I think this thread is closing down.
Braxton, Braxton, Braxton, free improv, free improv, free improv....
That is narrow, not diverse.

So what you been exploring and enjoying kitty?
