The reality remains that a typically promiscuous "n*ncy b*y" (good) is now no more likely to become Prime Minister or Archbishop than he has been in the past (bad)! Not to mention their literary tastes: http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2008/sep/20/labourconference.jkrowling

Not to mention their literary tastes:
I'm sure that he just meant financially. To go further than that would be imprudent surely?

If JFK Rowlings is worth £560 million, is it not a bit mean of her to only give £1 million to the Labour Party?

Brown said: "I am delighted that JK Rowling, who is one of the world's greatest ever authors, has made such a generous donation. I thank her for supporting the Labour party and our values of social justice and opportunity for all." That must be "imprudent" then I suppose. Baz

Yes Baz. I did read the article. I was merely attempting to inject some kind of HUMOUR into an otherwise DESPONDENT conclusion. I failed. Evidently.

JKR donated the money because she was a struggling single parent and objects to Conservative aims to provide tax breaks for married couples with children.
Well, she ain't bluddy struggling now is she? So why not hand over all her fortune to Nu Labour if she believes so strongly in it?

Because she knows that her money wouldn't go towards helping struggling single parents? Because she realises, like most of us, that even when we agree with some things that the government is doing, we are unlikely to ever agree with everything that they do? Because it gives Labour an incentive to continue to support struggling single parents (and unmarried couples) with the carrot of further donations hanging in front of their eager noses?

Because hh, you only have to sit on the designated unmarried mothers seat here, have sex with Mad Will who is a Jack the Lad, get impregnated and, voila! Here is a nice flat for you and baby!! All so easy.

All so easy. If it were only that simple... Couples raising a baby have enough financial problems Couples raising a baby in council accommodation have enough financial problems. What it must be like if you're also attempting to live on your own as well I dread to think. My sister has enough friends on the estate who are in this position and would be horrified and upset by your comments.

Sorry Anty and hh, I feel the need to relate that when I was doing a stint as a sabbatical SU officer the Women's Officer (who happened to come from Wolverhampton, which I don't remember as being in Wales) proudly boasted of how she got pregnant for the sole purpose of getting a council house, which she was sub-letting while at college, and making a nice profit out of it. There are, of course, many who become single mums without such plans, but getting pregnant to gain housing is no myth.

In fairness to Rowling, I don't think becoming a single mother was ever part of her life game-plan. But her experience may have given her a somewhat skewed perspective on the single parent issue.......just as Nelson Mandela's experience in South Africa gave him a somewhat skewed impression of the IRA.

I can think of two clear and obvious reasons: a) the money's hers and not theirs b) being more intelligent, creative and resourceful than anybody in "Nu Labour" ever has been, she realises the hypocrisy of large-scale funding of politics with proceeds gained entirely from a MYTH! If anybody earning £5600 per year were to donate just ten pounds to "Nu Labour", it is hardly likely that they would be indicating a hope that it might make much difference in the real world. Baz

There are, of course, many who become single mums without such plans, but getting pregnant to gain housing is no myth. I don't doubt that at all. But how many of those single mothers have the opportunity to sub-let while at college? I'd suspect that's an extremely small minority. Many of those single mothers will find themselves overwhelmed by responsibility. I just don't think it's fair to punish people who find themselves in a desperate situation because others are abusing the system. That's all. Sorry, but that simile is ludicrous. Please don't insult our intelligence.
Well said.
