Yes but dangerous and possibly quite stupid is just what some doctors ordered in the last 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 or ...... elections

Anyone planning to stay up all night on November 4th/5th? I'm sure the American contingent will I think I might. We could have an all-night MB party, right here. I'm up for that. All being well I'll have finished all my currently ongoing pieces of work by the end of Monday/start of Tuesday, so a Tuesday night under the duvet in front of the TV could be fun. I don't think I've done that since the 1992 general election. Do the results get announced on the 5th, British time? That would be a wonderful (bzw. awful) birthday present.

Another good reason to stay up then, tinsky! The more I think about this, the more I think it's one of the most important decisions that'll be taken in our time. For that, I'll stay up. (Will you have your laptop under your duvet? That doesn't sound right, does it? )

I think I'm going to stay up. A late night of work won't do me any harm anyway.

The last time I stayed up all night for a US election result was 4/5 November 1980. My daughter was being born upstairs in the spare bedroom while downstairs on the radio, when I was sent to fetch things by the midwife, Ronald Reagan was being elected to his first term as President. There was also unexpected heavy snow that night which transfixed the Malysian trainee midwife. She had seen several babies being born before but had never ever seen snow. This may partly explain how she came to pronounce the baby a boy before wrapping him up. And a boy she remained until several hours later when the doctor arrived, unwrapped him and offered a second opinion and 'Michael' faded away to be replaced by '........'. A strange night one way and another. But <cough> come to think of it, not much to do with 'Obama is the next President'. I may or may not stay up.

Thinking about it, I might have to stay up all the way through. In 2004 I bailed out before Ohio was called and look what happened there... A peculiar story indeed, George!

That story is even more alarming than the one of my son's friend who was told the child was going to be a girl, but it turned out to be a boy. At least in that case they got it right when he was born.

To remain off topic for a moment - how many people know what they would have been named had they been of the other sex? My parents were going to call me Geoffrey. The bf would have been Claudia. Anyone else? I'll be too nervous to sleep, no doubt, and will be watching through my fingers over my eyes.

I know a couple of Geoffreys but neither of them has a boyfriend called Claudia! I suspect I would have been called Jill, since that's the name that went to my sister when she emerged a couple of years later.

I would have been called Paul. Which is interesting because I went out with a lot of Pauls. 5 I think. Not all at the same time. Well, 2 at the same time but I'm not proud of that... I'll be getting an early night rather than staying up I'm afraid - I'm on a course the next day.

Did you ever get their names mixed up? On that topic, my mum could have caused a problem at one point. I'd gone home from Uni for Christmas while seeing Paul 1, who I was trying to get rid of as turned out to be really depressing. Met Paul 2 who was from Leicester and resolved to get rid of Paul 1 when I went back. At one point Paul 2 rang and mum answered the phone with "which one?" As luck would have it, Paul 2 was aware of Paul 1. Had it been the other way round I would have had some explaining to do!
