Extraordinarily, I don't know what I'd have been called if I'd been a boy. Considering I talked about names a lot with my mother, it seems most odd that I don't know, and now my parents are dead and I can't ask them. I do know that I was nearly called Alison.
This isn't about Obama either. Sorry. I am very nervous about the election.

'Michael' faded away to be replaced by '........'. Hopefully not 'Ronalda'. Indeed not, Mr S. Reagan Goneril Garnett. Oh dear, sorry all, I didn't mean to start all this. Shouldn't it be on the 'John Biden' thread? Wotdyamean we haven't got one?! I was going to be Gillian.

I've been told that they soon ruled out George Norris and Edward Michael on the grounds of the initials, but not so far as I can remember if there was a definite alternative had I been a girl.

If I'd been a girl, I'd surely be Turfana.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Well, the day has arrived. I was intending to stay up all night (well, you know, sort of dozing in front of the tv) with friends in London, but not sure whether my cold doesn't make this less advisable or even a fun prospect at all. We'll see. Meanwhile, here's the work of some very clever young boffins... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=wzyT9-9lUyE

In spite of the occasional cautious remark, the media are behaving as if it's in the bag. I wish they wouldn't. It's making me nervous.
Why are there such very long queues at the polls? I'm sure I've never queued for hours to vote in the UK.

Long US voting queues should not be such a surprise - they are the norm in most "third world" countries after all. I remember queues miles long when they voted in Zimbabwe, and also in S. Africa. So I don't see why it should be any different in the US. It is the only opportunity Jo the Plumber will ever have to say anything remotely worthwhile. The remainder of his life will be spent passively gawking at all the corruption and war-mungering that will inexorably still be taking place long after he has had his say. Baziron

Except, it seems, when socialism benefits the bankers.
I think (hope) a lot of people are very angry about the bailout. And so they should be - how many billions ploughed into it, meanwhile you can't get healthcare unless you have a full-time job?
(Just saw LB's post - for once I am of the same mind!)
