When in doubt, wash.

I was so lucky to have seen him in the touring show of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue in Buxton just a few weeks ago. Possibly his last public appearance? He did look frail, but still so full of life. Cry And he even played us his beloved trumpet at the end. A wonderful evening.

It's such a shock. So sad.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Yes, MJ, you were very lucky. I saw the team record ISAHAC some years ago (early 90s?) in the Paris Theatre on Lower Regent Street: a wonderful occasion, still very fresh in the memory!

Sad news indeed. A man who gave a huge amount of pleasure over many years. I hope he knew in how much affection he was held.

A very big loss.  RIP Humph, and thank you for all the very big laughs.

Nearly every Saturday I have scoured the radio listings in The Times hoping that ISIHAC is on at 12.30.  It will never be the same.

I went to a live recording of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.  I was very impressed with his professionalism and sharp wit.  He ad-libbed all the time and was always a match for any of the guests.  In my head I thought he was immortal.  I suppose he will be in a way.  Very well-respected and loved.  RIP.  Cry

In the 1970s-1980s Humph made my Monday nights with his Best of Jazz programme on Radio 2, though my listening did trail off in the 1990s as the music content was changing, and I read his similarly named series of books back in the 1970s which had me searching, with some success, for so many of the original 78s whose music he discussed at length.

He had another audience of course, for his humour. The only time I saw him live was in a 2/3rds empty Birmingham Symphony Hall, hardly the right venue for a small jazz band, and Humph made the most of that fact with his jokes (the average age of the audience was 60+) ably assisted by the likes of Ronnie Scott and Jack Parnell (dr).

We are richer for having enjoyed ISIHAC. If there isn't room for comic jazz musicians in Heaven, I don't want to go.
