Over on Radio 2 tonight I didn't catch exactly what Humphrey Lyttleton said but he's finishing with his Best of Jazz programme, his decision. He indicated, I think, at the end of tonight's programme that he has three more to do.

I'm concerned about what might replace his Monday night show; R2 controller Lesley Douglas might not be thinking jazz.

Respect is due Humph; and gratitude. He is a total one off. Without his personality fronting the jazz, prospects are bleak for real stuff on r2.

On a cynical note; another opportunity for SOMETHIN' ELSE PRODUCTIONS & JEZ!

The BBC press office have released more information:

Quote from: R2 edited
Humphrey Lyttelton last night announced that BBC Radio 2's The Best Of Jazz is to take a rest and return in the Summer of 2007.

The last show before the break will be on Monday 2 April at 8.00pm.

The Best Of Jazz will then be broadcast as a 13-week series twice a year.

Humph will continue to chair BBC Radio 4's I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue.

Please please say he is staying on as host of ISIHAC!

(I'm sure Samantha would not cope without him....)

Maybe Big Band Special is getting a bigger slot? Or perhaps Clare Teal will host a new show on Monday nights in place of Humph? But if the truth be known John, you're probably right. Lesley Douglas probably isn't thinking jazz.

Let us hope for someone who
a) knows what they talking about
b) has paid their dues.

I don't think BBC mgmt has the ability to select such a person .

Let us hope there will be a jazz program, full stop.

I wouldn't hold your breath. Nick Barraclough is the lastest presenter to jump ship at Radio 2 and there's no evidence he is being replaced.

Barraclough as you may have seen has turned up; at the new style Smooth FM.  No longer jazz territory, not even
Smoooooooooooth jazzzzzzz(sic) Angry. By the by, with my social work hat on I met a client who knew him 10 or so years ago as a jobbing muso, seems to be (hopefully still) a grounded sort of guy. Best show in that territory I
ever heard was that of the lovely Tracy McLeod who knew her Iris DiMent etc. Where is she now in the diaspora?

Well, the immediate replacement isn't jazz. After the Bank Holiday Monday, the old Humph slot is taken by Paul Jones's blues programme. I somehow doubt that PJ's vacated Thursday slot will have a jazz show.

If it's Paul Jones at least it isn't going Smoooooth...
I'd vote for Julian Joseph to stand in for Humph doing a Best of Jazz type prog.

But on Tuesday next week, Radio 2 a new series of Courtney Pine's Jazz Crusade begins at 23.30 ( !! ) Is that good or bad news ? It does say that a guest on the first programme is Ornette Coleman.

Great news but what is it with Jazz and late schedules. They should know we will all still be out listening to the wonderful music in our local underground jazz dens?
