Well, for losing something, surely Barbarina's L'ho perduta, me meschina from Figaro has to be the definitive example?

And for lost people, the first operatic characters that come to mind are Hansel and Gretel Smiley

With reference to Tommo's less obvious example, there must be a few examples of metaphorical loss of way or of dignity.  I can't think of an example off-hand - but surely there are a few instances in opera where somebody exclaims that they are "perduto"?

(And now I've thought of one: Desdemona declares herself "perduta" when Otello tells her that Cassio is dead, shortly before killing her.)

As well as being 'lost', what did she lose earlier in Act II?!

A handkerchief!

Who else loses a handkerchief, which proves to be her undoing?

I suspect you're thinking of Lisa in La sonnambula, who (through no fault of her own) loses her hanky in a strange man's bedroom in the middle of the night.

Valencienne in The Merry Widow loses her fan - but somehow in the end it all turns out to her advantage, unlike Angelotti in Tosca, whose loss of a fan leads to at least three deaths!

Never a wise move!

There's also Cinderella, who depending on whether you're listening to Rossini or Massenet, loses a bracelet or a glass slipper.

Very good.

Who is handed some lost papers which, if he'd only stopped to look at them, would have revealed his wife's adultery?

Who loses a ring? A spoon? A key?

Who loses a ring?
LOADS of opera characters  Cheesy Though when I say "lose" that's really translated as "having it nabbed by somebody who's feeling cleverer that day".

Am I right in guessing it's not that ring you're aiming at?

The one with the papers that would have revealed the wife's adultery... that's Stiffelio, in the opera of the same name.

Yep. You'd have thought that when he noticed his wife's ring was missing that something was up, wouldn't you?!
