Thank you, my friends!

I've just finished teaching Schiller's DON CARLOS for the first time at college, and I'm now hooked on obtaining more CD and DVD recordings of the Verdi. Any recommendations are welcome (I bet IGI has more versions of the opera than any of us!). I have the EMI Giulini and Karajan, DG Abbado on CD, and the Karajan, Levine and Pappano on DVD. I now have my eyes on but am undecided about the DG Karajan (Siepi and Jurinac), EMI Muti and Haitink (both CD and DVD), and Matheson (there is a super-bargain issue on Ponto : is the sound quality similar to the Opera Rara?). I've also tracked down two live Met recordings on a bargain label called Cantus-Lin (available at amazon.de), starring Siepi in the first, and Hines in the second (other names in those recordings include Barbieri, Thebom, Steber, Bjorling, Tucker, and Bastianini).

Thanks in advance, and talk you to later!

There is a downloadable "Don Carlo" on www.classicalmusicmobile.com - cond. Santini, recorded in 1954. At under 3 hours it must be severely cut but what can you expect for one euro? Cheesy Cast looks pretty good.

Thanks, harpy! I'll get the Santini (a bargain on EMI, also Regis) for the sake of Christoff and Gobbi, despite a couple of negative reviews on the rest of the cast. There's a 1961 Santini/Christoff on DG, but it's hard to find, even second hand. Also pity about the deleted Solti: Tebaldi and Bumbry, in particular, should be something.

Guilty as charged!  Embarrassed  Currently, I have the Abbado, Pappano and Matheson recordings of the French version, alongside the Giulini (live ROH and EMI), Santini (La Scala/DG) five act versions and Karajan (Berlin/EMI and Vienna live/DG), Santini (Rome/EMI), Haitink (ROH/Philips) and Votto (Florence live) four act versions. On DVD, there's the Pappano and Chailly recordings; I've not investigated the Met production.

I posted a comparison of the French versions at the 'other place' and I think, for a number of reasons, the Opera Rara is a must!

The DG Santini is, to me, very special. The majesty of Christoff's voice is quite something and I much prefer Bastianini as Posa - their big scene together is vocally thrilling. There are a couple of tiny, tiny cuts, but they are barely noticed. It hasn't been available in the UK for some time, and was last available, I think, as an import from Germany in the eary 90s...time for a reissue, I think. It's a tricky one to track down. I suspect Decca are more likely to reissue the Solti, perhaps in their Classic Opera series currently turning out a number of recordings.

I presume you're already licking your lips at the prospect of a Pappano/Hytner production at the ROH then, Inquisitore?

Too right, Reiner! Especially as Hytner has directed the Schiller before, it will be interesting to see what he brings to the opera. Potentially, a super cast - Villazon, Poplavskaya (booked after Gheorghiu decided that Elisabetta wasn't for her yet), Keenlyside, Ganassi...I see Furlanetto is Philip II - but the last time I saw him at the ROH (in Luisa Miller in 2003) I wasn't overly impressed, although it could have been an off-night. (At least we won't have to suffer Samuel Ramey's IGI which was a real disappointment in the Met broadcast this season).

I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for dates for that and snaffle a ticket as soon as booking opens - I don't suppose they will sit unwanted in the box-office for long!

Hytner is one of my heroes, he has the "Midas touch" with opera, and rarely puts a foot wrong.

FWIW I heard Furlanetto do Fiesco at the Bastille last year (I think - or maybe 2005?) and thought he was vg - a very moving performance too. I know it's not quite the same type of part though  Grin
