For those getting into training for next Sunday's St Francis of Assisi this afternoon's 'Discovering Music' on R3 looks as if will be a good way to help us get our bearings.

17.30 - 19.00  Discovering Music: Alwynne Pritchard explores Messiaen's vast opera with conductor Kent Nagano.

I guess the Prom ran over somewhat. Can someone advise what time the Discovering Music broadcast started?

Thanks IGI, I guess they will postpone the broadcast of "New Generation Artists" to a later date. I wonder what will happen on BBC4? Will they run over with the Prom, or cut it short?

I went over to Amsterdam in June to catch the fully staged version of this and it was rather special (although the sermon to the birds staging didn't quite work).

I must try and listen again to Discovering Music. Nagano's recording is very good. There's also one knocking around of the last four scenes with Fischer Dieskau in the title role.

I have the recording of the premiere, the Nagano recording and the Zagrosek with Fischer-Dieskau and it's still not enough Smiley

Well I feel sure you don't want the Salonen or de Leeuw broadcasts, both of which I have, in addition to the Nagano and Ozawa CD sets. Wink

I believe there's another complete recording (though currently unavailable) also with Van Dam.

I'd be very interested to hear the de Leeuw, he gave an excellent performance of Des Canyons aux Etoiles... at the Edinburgh festival a couple of years ago.

That's the Ozawa, from the first production. The EIF de Leeuw broadcast I have is from DAB. I'm not absolutely sure, but I think I used the Sony tuner, rather than saving the mp2 from a Wavefinder. I have it saved on 4 CD-Rs in 'Red Book' type format. I have not listened to it for some time, so I will have to dig it out and check it for playability some time soon.

I was thinking of this, honestly, but just worked out 4pm to c10pm means SIX hours standing for a work I have not heard before, not to mention queuing and hanging around before hand.

I think it would be risking my good experiences of the proms, so far.
