Hey guys, hope you are all keeping well.

The first step in moving things forward is to bring in a new moderator.  Some suggestions were that a moderator should be someone who doesn't participate in discussions... but as the choice is ultimately yours, we'll let this thread decide.

This is how it will work.  If you want to be the new moderator, you need to nominate yourself by posting here.  But for that to be considered, another member has to post here that they second you.

After a few days, all of the members that have nominated and been seconded will be put in a poll, for you, the community to vote on.

NOMINATIONS:

JohnW - Seconded by Kittybriton
OlliverSudden - Seconded by Il Grande Inquisitor
richard barrett - Seconded by OlliverSudden
Ron Dough - Seconded by Jonathon
Antheil the Termite Lover - Seconded by Bryn

EDIT :
Closing date for self nominations is Tuesday 23/10/2007 at 13:00
Closing date for Seconds is Tuesday 23/10/2007 at 19:00

I would suggest that this board - in view of the volume of messages it creates - needs a team of at least 3-4 moderators, to spread the load and provide for a breadth of views?

The idea of elected moderators is fair, reasonable, and sets a precedent for even-handed moderation which enjoys the support of the members.  I think all of the moderators should be elected, to avoid suggestions of cronyism to which other boards would be liable.

The plan at present is to elect one at a time.

We obviously have to see how this pans out before we can see where to go.

Hi,

I've discussed things with Michael and I support the new plan for additional moderators. I'll not assume that I remain as a moderator, and therefore I offer myself as a candidate.

Candidates offering their services on this thread need seconding.

If I don't get seconded then I won't go to the poll. If I don't go to the poll then I'm not going to be a moderator.

I will stick by the results of this thread, and I won't be a moderator unless voted for.

As part of my 'manifesto' as candidate, if I am part of the new moderator team I will maintain my wish that this forum avoid politics-promoting threads and discuss any issues with the other moderators and accept decisions of the new moderator team.

Can I ask, John, what would be your position if the other moderator(s) elected thought that 'political posts' (as in the pulled 'Politics of Modernism' thread) did have a place on these boards?

IGI, as I said "...accept decisions of the new moderator team" so say I was part of a three moderator team and two did not want to pull a particular thread or posting  then I would go along with that.

Just to clarify matters John.

Michael said the plan at present is to elect one at a time, now to me that assumes there will be one moderator.

You now say if you were part of a team of three moderators?

Suppose you were part of a team of only two moderators and the socio-politico-musico scenariio developed.  Then what would happen if you (if you were elected) and the other moderator disagreed?  Who has the casting vote?

Surely that is why a minimum of three moderators is needed?

Anna,

Yes, I agree with that.

Michael, do you agree with the suggestion of three moderators chosen from the poll?

With only one offer so faw, I think it would be a might foolish to jump in and say that the top 3 members in the poll would become moderators.

Initially the poll is for ONE moderator, but regardless of this, in the coming weeks more polls and moderators will arise.

Michael, would you permit me to disagree with you there?  Seeing the huge amount of work this would be for just one person, I think very few people would want to put their head in the lion's mouth.  Moreover since I believe many people people that there's a strong merit in having a team, and not one individual, this is also an inhibiting factor.

There are now multiple calls for a team of 3+ moderators, and only your own voice against this.  Could we not open it to three, in the hope of thus getting more nominations?   I am rather opposed to their being a single moderator, and so I am not inclined to either propose or second any names at all - unlesss the team could be widened to three (at least).

I shall emerge (perhaps briefly) from the shadows then to nominate myself. Smiley

I suppose I should offer some thoughts on procedure as well although they'll probably be clearish from the last few things I posted before I took a break.

I don't regard politics as unacceptable material in itself for discussion. To me the important things to avoid are personal attacks, offensive material and topic derailment, regardless of subject matter. There have been mature and enlightening discussions here on politics, sexuality, religion, squeaky-gate fire-in-a-petshop new music Wink and other contentious issues. I would like to see that continue. I value immensely the balance that had been reached at this site between amiable banter (sometimes with no discernible subject matter) and 'heavier' issues, musical and otherwise. For me that is what has made this place so special.

I would wish for discussion at the site to be regulated as much as possible in the course of discussion itself: most of the tricky moments here as I remember them have been dealt with not by removing threads or posts but by responses on the threads and perhaps the occasional back-stage PM.

Enough from me, anyway...

I think it’s early days, Michael. There are some contributors who I’d consider suitable candidates for the role who haven’t logged on since your announcement earlier today. I also think that some people are reluctant to announce their candidature as they would be unwilling to end up as the sole moderator; many of us have busy lives, jobs etc.
