Rather reluctantly, I'm going to put myself forward as a moderator too.

I don't think there should be any a priori restrictions on subject matter for discussions, agreeing with Ollie on the reasons for this.

I do think that decisions on moderating contentious issues, if they can't be agreed amicably between members and moderators, should be taken by polling all members and abiding by the result. (It seems to me that if this had been done previously a lot of bad feelings could have been prevented from developing.)

I think the content of discussions should reflect the makeup of the membership rather than the preferences of moderators, and I wouldn't, even if elected, be prepared to be part of a moderation team any of whose members thought otherwise.

I would like to second Member Barrett's nomination. Assuming I'm allowed to. Smiley

With only one offer so faw, I think it would be a might foolish to jump in and say that the top 3 members in the poll would become moderators.

Michael, would you permit me to disagree with you there?  Seeing the huge amount of work this would be for just one person, I think very few people would want to put their head in the lion's mouth.  Moreover since I believe many people people that there's a strong merit in having a team, and not one individual, this is also an inhibiting factor.

There are now multiple calls for a team of 3+ moderators, and only your own voice against this.  Could we not open it to three, in the hope of thus getting more nominations?   I am rather opposed to their being a single moderator, and so I am not inclined to either propose or second any names at all - unlesss the team could be widened to three (at least).

Reiner,

As I said, the plan is to have more than 1 new moderator.  But until we see who offers theirselves, it would be very foolish to say that we will use 3 from this poll alone.  Say that only 3 people put theirselves forward, that automatically means that ALL of them would gain moderator status, even if two of them recieved no votes.

I agree that more moderators are needed, but I also don't think that rushing into it would not be a good idea also.  One moderator is guarenteed from this, and MAYBE more, but until we see how it pans out, I think it is best to just wait and see.

I would like to be the first to second Oliver Sudden's nomination. Not only has he been an entertaining poster, but seems also to take a balanced view of the requirements.

[edit] I see Member Grew has beaten me to the post. No matter, my support remains steadfast.

[edit2] I would also like to second the nomination of John Wright on the basis that IMO his moderation so far has kept the forum functional.

If there are to be multiple moderators, then I'll put my name forward, too, if anybody thinks I might be a satisfactory candidate.

I thought so, Michael. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before Ron gets seconded by another member.

Oh, Cynical Moi!  And there was I Michael thinking you were being serious and caring about this MB

So one Moderator is guaranteed from this?  Oh, let me Guess, John Wright?

I think this whole thing is pathetic if that is the case.

The first action of a new moderator will probably be to propose the position of second moderator. I'm quite happy that these positions be decided one by one rather than in a mad rush at the beginning. This could actually help to produce a balanced team of moderators.
