Good morning, afternoon or evening, depending on your time zone.

My name is Friedrich Kuhlau, and I'm sure this name will be recognised instantly on a board such as this as belonging to the Germano-Danish composer of the Classical period who was a contemporary of Beethoven. I'm not a musician, nor do I work in the classical music industry, and I neither read nor write music - although I do write for a living.

My love affair with classical music began at 18. Now, at 35, I have thousands of recordings in my collection and a particular love of music from the Romantic period on into the early Modern period.

Despite amassing a wealth of CDs and downloads, I've still yet to experience everything that some commentators would regard as the 'core' repertoire of Western Art Music, although I have heard (and do enjoy) a sizeable chunk of it. My intention is to make a specialism of British classical music, especially that written in the first half of the 20th century. Progress in this direction is slow but steady.

So that's a little about me. I'm looking forward to contributing here (I've been a member of various forums for several years, many of these geared towards classical music), and I hope my arrival doesn't coincide with a temporary suspension of this forum on account of those who have nothing better to do than disrupt the exchange of ideas and views between others.

Oh, I'm currently writing a blog which is essentially a space for me to review - as far as I'm able - various recordings in my own collection. When I'm happy to start showing it to the world, I'll be sure to advertise a link to it in my profile here.

Here's to chatting with some of you soon.

A very warm welcome to you Kuhlau Smiley Sorry you caught us with our barricades up. It's not normally like that! I'm sure you'll find no shortage of people here to engage in discussion, or even just be frivolous with. It's a pretty broad canvas here and if you click on http://r3ok.myforum365.com/index.php?topic=2986.0 you can find out a little more about your fellow 'painters'. I hope you enjoy your time here.

Welcome, Kuhlau - a name that was indeed recognised and thus spared the fate of the horde of spammers who arrived at the same time as you, and were summarily dismissed.

Your intended specialisation in British classical music will find at least a few supporters here, myself very much included.  Wink

Enjoy your time here,

Many thanks to you both for the warm welcome and for sparing me an instant exile in cyperspace.

I shall begin involving myself enthusiastically in discussions here as soon as my current heavy workload (and imminent house move) are out of the way.

Hi there, martle.

Quite an impressive post count you've established here. Is this repeated on other forums? Cheesy I know of a couple of posters on another classical site who've racked up over 22,000 posts between them. One wonders where this pair get the time.  Huh

Actually, we're rather proud of martle.  Although he has only achieved highest power recently.

Hi Kuhlau,

Glad you made it through the spam wars.

This place has an awful lot of waffle, coffee, and fun, but in amongst it all an immense amount of interesting stuff about music - be that composition, performance, listening, ethics,.....

The Boarders Biogs thread is a good place to get to start to 'know' some members.  But I'm sure you'll form your own opinion very soon.

As with all fora, there are occasional spats where personalities clash - not at all surprising when an intensely personal thing like music is being discussed!  But on the whole this is a really good friendly place.

Have fun here

I always confuse Kuhlau with Kuhnau. I played a piano piece by one of them once - Grade 5 or 6 maybe? I think it was in C# or F# minor and called something like 'Spring Song', but I don't remember much more than the opening textures.

Welcome, anyway!

Welcome, Kuhlau,
Pianists usually know at least some music by Kuhlau. Most of us play his sonatinas while learning to play the insturment.
I hope to learn more about Kuhlau now since you are on board.
