Martle, I understand you. I think you went to the vet in good time and she will get better. It will take a few days to recover her fourth leg. I am worried for you both. It is always traumatic for a cat to go to vet. Please tell us how she is getting on. Meanwhile we all have to be brave and wait.
Sydney Grew, It is very difficult to survive in Academic world. I looked at my friends who are not academics. They are free after work, free Saturday and Sunday, can have vocations and their nerves are in better shape. Everybody in Academia has his/her share of nasty replies and one should not care at all. Also there are fashions in Academic research like in the real world. Mathematic is more objective subject, but it is very tough field. One can not get a good result fast. In other subjects it is very subjective and one has to net work to know people. I am not an academic, it was enough just to watch Mr TP.

martle,
please make sure that the cat has treats and extra comforts whilst she recuperates - if she doesn't usually have a box to sleep in, it might help to have one for a while: not necessarily open side up, but possibly to the side, or even to the bottom, with a small door cut in one side - different cats have varying preferences (though strangely my last two, both rescue cats, had a pathological fear of boxes of any kind).

You are a kind and sympathetic lot! George, my mistake. I should have prefaced that clause with something like 'She then retired to lick her wounds...'. She didn't start it, in any case, despite being in the 'right', territorially speaking. Ron, check. The treats are there when she needs them. Her little warm spot under the dining table is effectively her hidey-hole - dark, against a wall and warm because the heating pipes run directly underneath it.

I've been reading this thread with great interest although I don't know much about cats but............it's unusual for the male of a species to "attack" a female even territorially. Erm, are you sure that's what happened? Or was it more a bit of ...well....rough and tumble? She might just be playing hard to get you know!

Not within the human species, Milly Sorry, not wishing to go off-topic here.

Milly, as a cat keeper of long standing (although I don't have one now) a cat will attack anyone straying onto their territory - not in every case, sometimes they become friends - but I find Ginger Toms the most vicious of them all. I am assuming Marty would have had his little cat spayed so I don't think there would have been any amorous intentions involved.

Of course, thinking about it, neutered toms and spayed cats perhaps have a different agenda?

This is veering off topic a little, but I have only ever had (spayed) female cats and they have all been great friends. Personally I think that all domestic Toms should be neutered then there wouldn't be kittens being abandoned by the side of the road or drowned. Let the male of the species take responsibility for once!!

Both of my chaps have had the snip but should any other cat dare to so much as sit on `their` fence, cripes! Much bad language is exchanged, followed some very ill-tempered wrestling should the other cat dare to set paw in the garden. I probably suffer more loss of dignity than them by racing down the garden like a madwoman, flailing my arms about and yelling loudly. Then both parties swear at me. Sigh.

One of my girls, Sophie, a silver tabby, had a HUGE CRUSH on Dasher the Alsatian next door. She would run out, chirruping, and entwine herself around his legs gazing at him with admiration. He just stood there, totally bemused. He literally didn't know what to do!!
Oh, forgot, did have a male cat, William, half Siamese. He developed epilepsy and was on phenobarbitone!

I had a guinea pig with epilepsy. It was awful. He'd be running around fine and then suddenly he'd throw himself on his back and have a fit! I had to have him put to sleep.

Wimple has been "done" but is still fiercely terratorial. He shouts at anything and anyone and will engage in a fight even though he isn't any good at it and doesn't win.
He does have a little friend though who lives down the road and seems to fascinate him. Mind you, she's black, sleek and young and he's white, fat and old!

Yes Mort, thanks for asking. This morning she was able to put a little weight on her paw - just enough to get to her food bowl and wolf down a good-sized brekkie. So it must be better. She's still confining herself to her nest, but she looks fairly well!
