My chalumeau researches have led me where any serious chalumeau research must needs lead one: viz., to the music of Johann Christoph Graupner (1683-1760). I like some of his music a lot. Perhaps you will too.

He spent nearly his entire working life in Darmstadt. When Telemann pulled out of the search for someone to fill a certain post in Leipzig he was all set to go when his boss offered him lots of money to stay. And stay he did.

He wanted all his music destroyed when he died. It wasn't. In fact by a strange twist of fate it became the subject of an inheritance battle and was thus kept safely in storage. Which means that nearly all of his music has survived. 1418 cantatas for example. As well as about half of the surviving chalumeau repertoire.

There are some stunning recordings out there despite the fact that hardly any of the music is published. The manuscripts are held at the ULB Darmstadt; I'm going to start ferreting around there this summer.

I've posted some goodies at sendspace. They are:

Alma tradita, from Dido, Königin von Carthago
Ingrid Schmithüsen, soprano
L'Ensemble des idées heureuses / Genevieve Soly
Analekta FL 2 3162

La Speranza, from an Overture for recorder and strings in F
Natalie Michaud, recorder
L'Ensemble des idées heureuses / Genevieve Soly
Analekta AN 2 9115

Air (III), from an Overture for chalumeau and strings in Bb
Jean-Claude Veilhan, chalumeau
Mensa Sonora / Jean Maillet
Pierre Verany PV794114

Menuet, from an Overture for 2 chalumeaus and strings in F
Jean-Claude Veilhan, Yves Testu, chalumeaus
Mensa Sonora / Jean Maillet
Pierre Verany PV794114

Sarabande, from an Overture for 3 chalumeaus and strings in F
Jean-Claude Veilhan, Florance Jacquemart, Yves Testu, chalumeaus
Mensa Sonora / Jean Maillet
Pierre Verany PV794114

Réjouissance, from an Overture for 3 chalumeaus and strings in C
Igor Bettens, Gilles Thomé, Eric Lorho, chalumeaus
Graupner Ensemble / Igor Bettens
Vox Temporis VTP CD92 009

Chorale, from the cantata Ach, Gott und Herr
Ingrid Schmithüsen, soprano
L'Ensemble des idées heureuses / Genevieve Soly
Analekta FL 2 3162

They'll disappear before very long of course. If you go there and they've vanished (or of course if for some reason they just don't work!) PM or email me.

Fingers crossed Smiley

Ah; thank you very much for putting these up; it will take me two days before I can listen to these (having them downloaded already), but yes, listen to them I will.

Many thanks for posting these, Ollie. Had only vaguely heard of Graupner. The chalumeau stuff sounds really tempting and I can feel a purchase coming on...  Smiley

Good luck finding it... The Mensa Sonora disc is around the place (online at least - never seen it in a shop) but the Bettens was a complete beach to find. Turns up second hand from time to time for US$50, that sort of thing. (I didn't pay that.)

The Analekta discs aren't too hard to come by. No chalumeaus though!

Now those are darlin', darlin' pieces. If only the rest of the world were like that.

Thanks for posting them Mr S.

What i'm hearing I like a lot. Late-night information quest about to be started, methinks.

Cheesy Google Graupner and the first link is to a site where, apparently, you will find models of planes, ships and cars!!

I googled 'Graupner' hoping to find an explanation, without the embarrassment of asking, as to why both Ollie and Chafing Dish referred independently to 'Graupner bug'.

Either way, a new name and a new discovery as far as I am concerned and look forward to following it up further tomorrow. In the meantime I've got that 'Air III' happily pootling round in my head.

I mentioned on the Telemann thread that I'd been bitten by it and thought well, that has to be the name of the Graupner thread...

That Air III hasn't left my head for months, George.

(That makes me an airhead I suppose.)

Ah, hence CD's bug reference too! All is clear now. I am now at peace and will to bed soothed by gentle zephyrs and chalumeaux.

Well, the chalumeaus are bloody gorgeous, but ... um, the music's a bit on the watching-paint-dry side?
