...and on to the Concertgebouworkest under Mengelberg also in Mahler 4, from 1939.

I'm wondering if anyone's ever going to top this one. They don't make musicians like this any more. Certainly not string players, anyway...

Here it's Bruno Walter's live 1950 Mahler 4. Free this month with Diapason.  Smiley

And damn fine it is too. I think Irmgard Seefried might be very near the top of my list of fave sopranos in the finale. (Up till now it's been Ameling with Haitink and then a very big gap back to the rest of the field...)

ollie, have you heard Hilde Güden on Walter's 1955 live Vienna Mahler 4? For me it's even better than the 1950 account - and in far superior sound. But I know that some regard Güden  as, erm, an acquired taste.

NS here:

The chant for the Propers is done spectacularly well - almost overshadowing the Mass itself!

I'm fond of Gueden in the Erich Kleiber Rosenkavalier so that's an attractive thought. I don't have that recording, no - I only have about 20 Mahler 4s.  Roll Eyes

Jo Vincent isn't bad in the Mengelberg either for what it's worth. Anyone know a particularly good remastering of that one? I'm sure the Membran box set (10 CDs, €10) is unlikely to be state of the art.

I only know Güden in Böhm's recording of Daphne, and I haven't heard anyone else who sounds to me as perfect for the part as she does. I can imagine her Mahler 4 would be quite something.

That Josquin/chant CD looks like something I'd enjoy. (pause) Now I've been and gone and ordered it. That's the second time today this has happened. I like both of those ensembles very much. I assume they don't actually sing together at any point? (that would be as weird as heck)

Oh, sorry, yes, now spinning: Leonhardt playing the Second English Suite. The subtlety of his sense of rhythm and time is staggering.

(Can subtlety be staggering?)

Indeed it is. (When I said that Güden's an acquired taste, it's one I acquired when I first heard her - on the Kleiber Rosenkavalier and Figaro - I can't remember where it was that I got the impression that my enthusiasm wasn't universally shared.)

You won't regret it, Richard!

I'm sure I've seen some reviews that suggest Ens Organum sing the Propers and Ens Clément Janequin sing the Ordinary.  There are four singers in each group on this recording.  In fact, most of it sounds as though it's sung together, though ECJ seem to do some of the polyphony as solo sections. And it's not weird (though the chant is as challenging to comfortable preconceptions as is usual from EO) - just glorious!

Dvořák Cello concerto, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Prague Philharmonia / Bělohlávek.

Go on, you didn't expect that did you?

NOBODY expects Jiří Bělohlávek! Our main weapon is surprise! Surprise and accents you can't type on a PC!

I had a listen to some Panufnik last night, Sinfonia sacra (not Sfere as previously advertised, I wasn't looking at the CD closely enough). I find the starkly systematic structure appealing, but I can't really get on with the material and I don't much like the way he makes the orchestra sound. Can't win 'em all.

Nor on a Mac without changing your keyboard to Czech or copying and pasting from a web page, surely? Both of which worked fine on a PC last time I tried...

I didn't actually type Nō the other day either while I'm fessing up.

I've been meaning to get this for ages but I decided to buy a load of Zimmermann the other day.
Am I right in thinking that 25 Kärwa Melodien just won't work if you multitrack two clarinets...?

The Sfere is going to be rather further up your street, I'd guess, r, (and as mentioned before, Storgårds disregards the composer's direction for the last half of the Sacra completely anyway, so even for those of us who are besotted with it, it's a disappointing experience).

But you can click on the national flag top right, select "Show Character Palette" click on 'by Category' and select 'Accented Latin'

But I'm sure you knew that....
