It is really odd. The next question should be: which is the better violin concerto?! I'd probably opt for the Elgar (ducks behind sofa).

Another composer clue is needed, methinks:

Offenbach – The Tales of Hoffmann
Beethoven
Chopin
Liszt
Nyman

One piece identified so far, but, in truth, that one is probably the least helpful in spotting the specific connection.

Offenbach: Hoffmann (offstage performance of Don Giovanni)
Nyman: Il Re Don Giovanni
Liszt: Reminiscenes de Don Juan
Chopin: ?
Beethoven: ?

Been listening to Act I of a new performance of Siegfried this morning (see Opera House thread).  Cheesy

I thought I was wrong!

Chopin: Variations on 'La ci darem la mano'.

Can the Beethoven be a quotation? 'DON GIOVANNI is immoral' (or something along that line.)  Embarrassed

No, but it's not in the work's title!  Tongue

Actually it is a quotation, but a musical one...  Wink

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

That's the one! Now, where does Ludwig van B quote it?

Diabelli Variations?  (No, can't remember which one)

Yes! Variation 22. That completes the puzzle - congrats to Parsifal and Perfect Wagnerite!

Offenbach – Tales of Hoffmann (Don Giovanni is the opera being performed by Stella in the prologue/epilogue)
Beethoven – Diabelli Variations (Var Number 22 is based on Leporello’s ‘Notte e giorno faticar’)
Chopin – Variations on ‘Là ci darem la mano'
Liszt - Réminiscences de Don Juan
Nyman - In Re Don Giovanni

Back to Siegfried now...

I'm already there! Much as I admire the Beethoven, it doesn't do for me what (particularly) the 4th Piano Concerto does. St-Saens is hugely entertaining, as ever, but is much more "on the surface".

A quartet with an odd one out:

Donizetti
Delius
Verdi
Debussy

First stab...I'll await the verdict before revealing the Delius and the connection though, as it could be wildly wrong... Wink

Donizetti – Lucia di Lammermoor
Verdi - Falstaff
Debussy – Pelléas et Mélisande
