Right, this is a real stab in the dark here, but .... MAGPIES? One for sorrow Two for joy - Beethoven Ode to Joy Three for a girl Four for a boy Five for silver Six for gold Seven for a secret never to be told - Birtwistle/Cimarosa

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

A brave stab, pw, and an excellent idea (he says, storing it away in the old memory! ), but no. I will offer the final composer, though: Mozart Birtwistle/ Cimarosa – Secret Theatre/ Il matrimonio segretoBeethoven Stenhammar Josef Strauss Borodin Selim Palmgren Three more operas lurking here, amongst other vocal pieces and a march...

Not the Magic Flute, but you are looking for something operatic. Two very popular stage works are in the list.

Clue: The Borodin contains a famous dance sequence and I'm sure you'll see the light re the Beethoven soon.

Good work, John. Knowledge of the plots not necessary to spot the connection, although some digging will be required for the Beethoven - you'll need a particular moment from the score. I've never actually been a huge fan of Fidelio (he admits sheepishly!), but Prince Igor contains some very fine music, especially the 'Polovtsian' Act.

Good work, John. Eh? Good work squeezing clues out of IGI for the Beethoven - you'll need a particular moment from the score. I've never actually been a huge fan of Fidelio (he admits sheepishly!), but Prince Igor contains some very fine music, especially the 'Polovtsian' Act.
I have a Fidelio vinyl boxed set, DG/Fricsay with a nice booklet/libretto, and a Borodin vinyl set which includes the Prince Igor orchestral music, those dances with chorus, and some good notes there too. Might I learn the connection from reading those good notes in both ? (I'll also listen too) John W

IGI,
Reading the brief plots I'm thinking the connection is 'captivity'.
So I will quickly suggest the Mozart is The Abduction from the Seraglio. No time just now to look at the others.

IGI,
Looking at a short plot summary it seems that the character Margit is in a form of 'captivity' in:

I don't get the Josef Strauss. Now Johann II's Fleidermaus has a jail in it.....

Some good attempts today, chaps, but no go on the captivity theme...it's only the Beethoven which has that theme, but it's not just Florestan behind bars. You'll see the light in no time. I'm sure you'll spot the Strauss rising from the ashes and on to glory. It would also be a good time to reveal that the Mozart piece was a collaborative effort... There, that should be enough clues to get you scrabbling for the connection.
