Given that we already have Orange and Silver, it's not by any chance something to do with words which don't rhyme with any other words...

The rhyming’s not important –
The Inquistor tells you so.
Perhaps another composer clue
Will cause the ideas to flow?
But who to choose as number nine?
Strauss or Schumann could be great…
But I’ll settle on Bedřich Smetana
To lead the game to Czechmate!  Cheesy

Elgar
Haydn
Torke – Ecstatic Orange
Sousa
Puccini
Daniel Purcell - By silver Thames' flow'ry side
Villa-Lobos
Wagner
Smetana

Ah!  I think I'm getting a better idea now.  "Silver" isn't the key word at all, is it...

I'm thinking rivers now!

Strauss - Blue Danube
Wagner - any number of Rhine references
Smetana - Vltava/Moldau, depending on who you're listening to

Back soon with some more, if that's the right answer Smiley

Later edits:

Villa-Lobos - Amazonas
Elgar - Severn Suite
Sousa - Across the Danube
Puccini - I'm racking my brains... references to the Arno (Gianni Schicchi) and Yangtze (Turandot)... there's got to be something about the Seine in Il tabarro... but I can't think of anything obvious.  Perhaps I am on the wrong track altogether Embarrassed

Villa-Lobos – Forest of the Amazon
Wagner – Rhinegold
Smetana – Vltava
Johann Strauss II – The Blue Danube

Haydn?

The Battle of the Nile

(With apologies to Ruth for riding in on her coat tails again. I bow the knee in awe.)

Note to self: must not get involved in quizzes at bedtime.  I awoke this morning thinking "West.  Is there a West River?  As in La Fanciulla Del?"

Edited to say: IGI, your final clue also mentioned Schumann.  Would that be the Rhenish Symphony?  That's the only thing I can think of.

I have a quiz:

Find the pieces and what links them and why:

A set of "songs" by a priest?
A requiem by a guitar playing composer?
A waltz by an astronomer? and
A set of piano pieces by a person sharing the nationality of the priest?
