Took longer to leave work than I anticipated, but here we are... IGI, can I have a flying guess? With an obscure LvB.
Dvorak - The Wild Dove Stravinsky - Firebird Haydn - Symphony No 83 'The Hen' Beethoven - 'I’m Cockatoo, the Tailor' from "Die Schwestern von Prag"; called Opus 121a
Edit: ah, there's also Beethoven - Opus 79: Piano Sonata No. 25 in G major ("Cuckoo")
and the 5th/link would be Respighi -Birds (Gli Uccelli)
Great work, John! Respighi's Birds are the link and I had the Piano Sonata no.25 as the cuckoo link; it's not a nickname I was familiar with and shall listen with interest next time I hear it.

Back to bbm's quintet, could it be the appearance of tritones?
Richard Strauss - Salome Vivaldi - Gloria Britten – War Requiem Beethoven – Fidelio Rossini - Des Tritons s'il vous plait/"Some tritones, please''
Sorry IGI not to do with tritones. I might put some metoerological connections, perhaps?? Meteorological, eh? How about a spot of stormy weather? Beethoven - Pastoral Symphony (Storm) Rossini - the storm in The Barber of Seville (or La Cenerentola) Vivaldi - La Tempesta di mare Britten - storm in Peter Grimes Strauss - storm in the Alpine Symphony

IGI nothing to do with that either, I am afraid. If you get the Britten the rest should follow suit, or even the Beethoven, something metrological, symphonically speaking!!

Thanks, bbm. I can't believe I came up with tritones as a connection, but had missed the storms! A new one to puzzle over, then. What connects these four composers, who is the odd one out and why? Richard Strauss Poulenc Debussy Prokofiev

Definitely a connection between their works, John. To tidy up the previous puzzle, I should also mention that, in my haste with the champers earlier, I hadn't noticed the Stravinsky piece offered. To fit in with Respighi's 'The Birds', it should really have been The Song of the Nightingale to go with Dvorak's Dove, Haydn's Hen and Beethoven's Cuckoo.

Right. Having got a 'better" answer for Beethoven I forgot to check Stravinsky more closely Definitely a connection between their works, John. oh well, having just read short bios at least I know a bit more about these composers John W

Tricky one this, IGI. It isn't games again is it?
Poulenc - Jeu from Les Biches
Debussy - Jeux
Ravel - Jeux d'eau
Tcherepnin - Jeux de la Nativite
Lawks a' mercy! It turns out there are FOUR Tcherepnins. That really is an outrage.

Sorry for the delay - have just returned from my long weekend in the Malverns (think I'll have to post some of my photos taken with my new 'Ron' camera!) Not games, no, but your Debussy and Poulenc are the correct pieces, George! The Tcherepnin you are seeking is Nikolai. Richard Strauss Poulenc - Les BichesDebussy - JeuxProkofiev Ravel Tcherepnin Stravinsky
