Er, I'm so sorry, that was unworthy of the NMC thread.

Oh, it was the Prokofiev and it was called something like Mivvi and Lolly?

Very well done, George! The Prokofiev was indeed the odd one out - Ala and Lolly was commissioned by Diaghilev, but was rejected by him too and the ballet saw the light of day as the orchestral Scythian Suite!

Tcherepnin - Narcisse et Echo(1911)
Stravinsky – Rite of Spring (1913)
Debussy - Jeux (1913),
Ravel - Daphnis et Chloé (1912),
Richard Strauss - Josephs-Legende (1914)
Prokofiev - Ala and Lolly, rejected by Diaghilev and turned into the Scythian Suite
Poulenc - Les Biches (1923)

The Tcherepnin Narcisse et Echo has much in common with Daphnis, including a wordless chorus, but predated Ravel's work by a year! (Good recording on Chandos).

Of course, GG!

Could we be looking for a Spanish connection?

Anderson - Alhambra Fantasy
Verdi - Don Carlos (The Escorial)
Britten - Mont Juic

Or a connection with the sun?

Anderson - Stations of the Sun
Britten - The Sun shines down
Mussorgsky - Sunless

Neither of those, I'm afraid, Your Eminence.

Perhaps I should say that the connection is a thematic one rather than a particular word that is common to the titles.

Mmmm. Could it be a food connection?  Smiley

Mussorgsky - The Great gate of (chicken) Kiev?
Britten - Albert Herring
Anderson - Tiramisu

Struggling for a Verdi at the moment, however...

You have the correct Picture there, IGI, but not the connection I'm after. You get another composer for that.

Mussorgsky  -  The Great Gate of Kiev

Britten

Julian Anderson

Verdi

Gershwin

What about Verdi's Rigatoni, Jerusalem [Artichoke] or Un Ballo in Mash-chera?

Ah, yes, hadn't thought of that one!  Cheesy

I wonder if we're looking for specific locations?

Anderson - Beautiful Valley of Eden
Gershwin - An American in Paris
Britten - Death in Venice

Oh dear, I'm beginning to realise that absolute power doesn't bring happiness either. No, I'm afraid not once again. Not places, nor are those the works in question.

Never mind, George. At least we're under way with one correct answer. I think this probably requires a little more lateral thinking in the cold light of day...  Smiley

Good night for now.
