Mmmm, so are we looking for a carol he wrote? Or could it be something from Gawain, which is set at Christmas?

Neither, I'm afraid! The Mancini and Fry should point you in the right general direction. (I knew it was too easy difficult ... )

All I get when searching Birtwistle and Santa is Santa Claus Parades, but it doesn't seem clear whether this is actually a composiition by HB (not listed in his works list on UE). Confused!!

Er, it's not one that I know of! (Well, that -- as we all know -- means precious little ... ) You might like to try the English variant?

Aha! Father Christmas is a character in Down by the Greenwood Side. Don't know it at all...any good? Text by Michael Nyman, I see.

That's the one, IGI! It's ages since I heard it (from an old tape), and I've never seen it. I live in hope ... Anyway, congratulations! So we have: Birtwistle – Down by the Greenwood Side (Father Christmas) Fry – Santa Claus (Christmas Symphony) Mancini – Santa Claus (soundtrack) Pfitzner – Das ChristelfleinOne of the characters in the Pfitzner is Knecht Ruprecht, who -- as this, er, charming picture shows -- is one of Santa's/Nikolaus's helpers: And, of course, these days Birtwistle himself looks not unlike Father Christmas. Yes, Tommo, I might have added the Britten if we'd got really stuck, notwithstanding my aversion to most of his music ...

Thanks, opi. I don't think I know any of Pfitzner's music at all, even Palestrina.
Time to try something a bit different. We haven’t had an acrostic puzzle for a while. For each of the ten composers listed, find a Christmas or winter-related composition. The initial letters of these ten will make a further composition by one of the composers already here! Your ten composers are (in strict alphabetical order):
Berlin Berlioz Delius Handel Holst Philip Lane Menotti Rutter Tchaikovsky Vaughan Williams
Off to tackle Sainsbury's now...wish me luck.

Good luck, IGI! (Looking at that list, I might just beetle off to Sainsbury's myself ...)

I survived!
Back to the puzzle, I should have mentioned that the mystery work you can make from the initial letters of the ten compositions is made up of two words (4,6).

Berlioz - l'enfance du Christ?
Yes, Tommo. As I'm leaving out definite/indefinite articles, this counts as an E!
