The final piece in the puzzle is a very important member of Batman's entourage.
In a murder mystery, he would be the first suspect.

ALFRED!  Cheesy

And how appropriate that you should solve it!

I did have Normand Lockwood's The Scarecrow, Marie Samuelsson's Penguin Quartet and Innocent Ujah Idiba (also known as '2face' Idiba) in the wings but that would've bin a bit desperate init.

The ties that bind

It maybe the weekend but the brain cells still have to be excercised. So here are a few. One is a poet(if that is allowed!?!?!?)

Philip Larkin
Poulenc
Ravel
Lalo

All I would say at this time, is that there is one common type of something they wrote, etc.

Aubade?

That gives me a useful excuse, if one were needed, to pop over to the Poetry Thread and post the Larkin one there.

Well spotted George, but what a profoundly depressing poem that is.

I've a sneaking suspicion we should be looking at the operatic stage for this one? (and possibly for operas depicting events from Greek mythology)

Strauss - Daphne
Handel - Apollo e Dafne
Offenbach - Huh
Cavalli - Gli amori d'Apollo e di Dafne

Is it something to do with transformations?

Strauss  -  Daphne (transformed into a tree)

Handel  -  Orlando (someone is transformed into a bush, aren't they? or back from one?)

Cavalli  -   Calisto is transformed into a little bear and then a constellation (quite a day for her)

Offenbach  -  Huh  That's where I get stuck too Cheesy

[Later: Aha! Thank you Mr Google. There's an Offenbach operetta called La Chatte Metamorphosee en Femme (but with an accent). That would seem to fit the bill. <lickscreamemoticon> ]

[Even later still, so another colour change is called for: If we make the Handel one Acis and Galatea instead (Acis turns from Shepherd into Water Feature) then maybe the connection is that the transformations are all taken from Ovid?]

George, why are you invoking a "lick scream" emoticon?

The Offenbach doesn't sound like it comes from Ovid...  is this an odd one out round?

Font Faceed for: If we make the Handel one Acis and Galatea instead (Acis turns from Shepherd into Water Feature) then maybe the connection is that the transformations are all taken from Ovid?]

This would suggest that the Offenbach is Orphee aux Enfers.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)
