At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

I am not very well up on progressive music, or avant garde music. I prefer to call it the former as opposed to the latter. I thought these composers will intrugue you. Hopefully this will be a more challenging one than my last one!

Cornelius Cardew
Nikolaus Decius
Léonin
Karlheinz Stockhausen

Ok, let's try and solve this one:

Stockhausen - In the Sky I Am Walking (American Indian Songs)
Cardew - Four Principles on Ireland
Léonin - Polyphony
Decius - Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr

The connection? No idea!

Are we seeking a link between four musical works or is it another aspect of their lives, bbm?

I can only find two hymns by Decius - Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr and O Mensch, bewein (the one used in the St Matthew Passion).  The link to polyphony and the Notre Dame school completely eludes me, I'm afraid!

I'm sure you must be on to something with organum, PW. There don't seem to be any works with 'organum' or 'organa' in their titles but is it that the later composers consciously used some of the Leonin-type organa techniques in their music?

Is there some link with David Jackman, he of 'Organum' and prior to that it Cardew's Scratch Orchestra?  Huh

The Stockhausen is correct, the Leonin I was looking for is the term 'organa'. The other two aren't right.

I can only find two hymns by Decius - Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr and O Mensch, bewein (the one used in the St Matthew Passion).  The link to polyphony and the Notre Dame school completely eludes me, I'm afraid!

It's not either of those. I think that it's the other surviving hymn by Decius that I'm looking for. It's a setting of the Sanctus from the mass (the specific title I'm looking for is in Old German).

I'm sure you must be on to something with organum, PW. There don't seem to be any works with 'organum' or 'organa' in their titles but is it that the later composers consciously used some of the Leonin-type organa techniques in their music?

That's not the link I'm afraid. It's rather more cryptic than that...
But I think when you find the Decius it should be easier.
You're looking for a link akin to the last one that I posted.

That's from the Agnus Dei IGI.

Plummeter? Vlado Plummeter? Sky Masterson? Luke Skywalker?

I've a sinking feeling it is something to do with Star Wars Cheesy. Isn't Princess thingy, the one with the built in Sennheisers, called Organa or it's one of her names? But if so there is the greater mystery of why IGI happened to light on that particular Stockhausen piece apparently at random. Truly His Eminence moves in mysterious ways.
