No sports, I'm afraid.
I'll let you have my clue, though. (Don't want to take too much time away from those poor children's reports!)
A 1928 piano work by Henry Cowell should lead you to the theme.

If the Henry Cowell piano piece is Tiger, then we could be looking at animals?
Michael Daugherty - Flamingo Blitzstein - Androcles and the Lion Robert Farnon – Poodle Parade Cowell – Tiger

Now we're getting somewhere! But the Cowell piece is incorrect... However, the Farnon is CORRECT! Go with that...

Blitzstein - Chesapeake Bay Retriever Robert Farnon – Poodle Parade Cowell – Two Woofs for piano
Struggling to find other canine links at the moment. I suspect the Guastavino could be something to do with chihuahuas?! Would Gershwin’s ‘Walking the Dog’ be on your reserve list?

Now, I did wonder if Michael Daugherty's Dead Elvis would quote from Hound Dog, but listening to it, sadly it doesn't. Fun piece, though.

Oooh, you're going to kick yourself! You mean it is Dead Elvis (or possibly Elvis Everywhere, for which there aren't any sound clips)?!!

Ok, well I know IGI has been busy with reports. But I'll give this puzzle another 24 hours before taking it to the vet to be put down. It's just doggie donkey work now...

Oh dear. This puzzle now needs to be gently put out of its misery. Never mind - IGI got the connection, so we're were just missing a couple of details. Let's remember, complete and mourn... Those identified by IGI: Cowell - Two Woofs, the catalyst. Blitzstein - Chesapeake Bay RetrieverRobert Farnon - Poodle Parade Those reamining, may they rest in peace... Guastavino - El labrador y el pobre Michael Daugherty - Beat BoxerMarc-Antoine Charpentier - Motet for St. Bernard Lest we forget.

Sorry, martle - didn't really have time to mop that one up, though I could kick myself about the Charpentier! Another doggy candidate could have been Beethoven's Elegie auf den Tod eines Pudels ( Elegy on the Death of a Poodle), WoO 110!! I shall have to come up with something similarly fiendish this weekend!
