Very good, pw! Josef Strauss – Die Libelle, polka Vaughan Williams – The WaspsMussorgsky – Song of the Flea or you could have had The Nursery: The BeetleAho - Insect Symphony (Symphony No.7) Just Nielsen, Britten and Saint-Saëns to go in the mini-beast hunt. Any ideas who else could be crawling on the subs' bench? The Nielsen and Saint-Saëns are songs (the Nielsen choral) and there are two linked pieces which would qualify for Britten.

Incidentally, the Aho 7th Symphony originated from material he wrote for an opera, Insect Life, and is rather fun. There's a Foxtrot & Tango for Butterflies, a movement for grasshoppers, another for dung beetles and one for ants, which is very militaristic and involves much anvil hammering. I bought the disc after hearing Aho's 3rd Symphony at the Proms. Clips can be heard from BIS via Naxos' website... http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=BIS-CD-936

Aha. I see we need closure on this one, IGI.
Britten - The Fly (from the Songs and Proverbs of Blake), and Spider and the Fly
Neilsen - The Spider's Song
Saint-Saens - La Coccinelle (ladybird)
Woo hoo!!

Very good, martle. I had a completely different trio! Nielsen - Græshoppen, for female chorus Britten - Two Insect Pieces for oboe and piano: I. The Grasshopper ii. The WaspSaint-Saëns - La cigale et la fourmi (which is also the title of a movement from Poulenc's Les animaux modèles) Yesterday, I read a French version of The Very Hungry Caterpillar (La chenille affammée) to my class, as we were learning the days of the week! Still tied up with report-writing, but I might be able to come up with a new one later...

Ha! Got back here first.
Right, try these four (with one or two more having their calves rubbed by the physio on the sideline):
Michael Daugherty Blitzstein Marc-Antoine Charpentier Guastavino
And it's a theme, not a common word. Bon chance!

Ah well, now you say that, it's obviously, um, Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Lake and Palmer Michael Daugherty - Fire and Blood Blitzstein - Spanish Earth M-A Charpentier - Air <cough>from 'Louise' Guastavino - Um, eau lait and it's Rebel's Les Elements Embrocation which is being massaged into the subs' calves. No, it's not that at all is it.

I suspect we're not looking for a common word connection here, but a theme?
The only Daugherty work I've heard was Above Clouds from Ghost Ranch, having been to the second performance, but I can't see a link there. Let's have a bit of a wild stab...
Michael Daugherty - Le Tombeau de Liberace (!) Blitzstein - Regina Marc-Antoine Charpentier - Les arts florissants Guastavino - La rosa y el sauce (The Rose and the Willow)

Good evening, IGI!
A theme, indeed. But no hits there, I'm afraid.

Good morning, IGI. I trust the water meadows are looking ravishing in the sunshine today!
Sorry, but no hits there either. I'll throw in a fifth composer, which I think may make the job much easier...
Michael Daugherty Blitzstein Marc-Antoine Charpentier Guastavino Robert Farnon
There is no 'mystery' composer here, but I do have a clue which will lead you quite easily to the theme, if required!

A beautiful morning here, but no walks in the water meadows for me (reports!) Whenever I see Farnon's name, I always think of his 'Jumping Bean'...could it be a sporting link? Michael Daugherty - Leap DayBlitzstein - Labor for victoryMarc-Antoine Charpentier - Le Triomphe des DamesGuastavino - Robert Farnon – Jumping Bean
