At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

I was thinking monasteries. Apart from Ketelbey's In a Monastery Garden there's also Poulenc's Litanies ŕ la vierge noire which was inspired by his experience at Rocamadour (is that even a monastery?). No idea about Bartok or Schumann though...

I think we need to ask IGI: common word link, or theme?

Neither monasteries or Persia, folks. I think we need to ask IGI: common word link, or theme?
It's not a common word link, but is thematic. Poulenc Bartók Schumann Ketčlbey

I was thinking about Hawaii. Ketelbey's By the blue Hawaiian waters The text from Poulenc's Rapsodie nčgre (Honoloulou) is 'Honoloulou, poti lama! Honoloulou, Honoloulou, Kati moko, mosi bolou Ratakou sira, polama!' (words by 'Makoko Kangourou') But something tells me that up the wrong tree I am barking.

Nobody behind the arras on this occasion, martle! The Poulenc and Bartók work as a pair in this case, whilst there are several possibilities for the Rautavaara.

I'm struggling here. Looking at Poulenc and Bartok's worklists to see some kind of commonalities and not getting very far unless it has something to do with works written in memory of other composers? I shall have to come up with something similarly fiendish this weekend!
Is this puzzle the result?

Is this puzzle the result? Yep! I see this is a bit of a struggle, so I'll offer another composer at this stage, then maybe you'll see the light in good time... Poulenc Bartók Schumann Ketčlbey Rautavaara Coates

Right. Is the Poulenc Aubade? Since it's a song about dawn? Making the Rautavaara something like his opera The House of the Sun The Ketelbey must be something like Italian Twilight or In the Moonlight
How's this so far?
