Good try, auto, and one 'hit', although a little more digging is required. Another composer?

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

A crepuscular or penumbral theme?

Three shots a little wide of the target, I'm afraid. A couple of solo piano pieces in there, as well as two operas. The nocturnal link is proving a bit of a red herring, I think.

A few hits there, Anty! It is a ghostly theme, but 'ghost' is not always the word you're seeking.

Funnily enough, I was just about to come in with the suggestion of ghosts - but it was going to be a fairly wild guess!

The Berlioz must therefore be, more specifically, La spectre de la rose.

And for the Prokofiev, how about the Hamlet incidental music, or more specifically the Ghost of Hamlet's Father?
