Two other possibilities for John Ireland (pursuing a couple of theories now, somewhat blindly)
Ireland - Ireland - Horn the Hornblower or On a Birthday Morning Charpentier – Luctus de morte augustissimae Mariae Theresiae Galliae J. Strauss II – Jokey Polka
Sorry, none of those are right.

I'm about to plug in my brain and give this a go-
meanwhile, Ian (or anyone else!) - any thoughts about my quartet?

Have had my brain occupied in various other directions today (not just posting here - also doing lots of writing and phoning) - I had a think last night and didn't think of anything initially, but will give it a closer look later.

Rosyln, is it an Oscar Wilde link?
Ibert - La ballade de la geôle de Reading Williamson - The Happy Prince Zemlinsky – A Florentine Tragedy (libretto by Wilde) Liebermann – The Picture of Dorian Gray

My word - to get one answer, IGI, may be regarded as fortunate; to get all four looks like genius!!!

Can you let me know, IGI, whether the Singleton in your other one is Alvin?

Ian, that was Anna's puzzle. I'm waiting to solve (or more likely, for someone else to solve!) your sextet before setting another.

My Blow reference material is rather scanty - Welcome, Welcome every guest is, acc to Grove, ?St Cecilia's Day; that doesn't help with Zimmermann; the first piece that comes to mind when I think of him is his Requiem für einen jungen Dichter. Something about polystylism? Something that could apply both to the opera and the Requiem?

Any significance to the fact that we have two carpenters amongst the composers?

Are you there, roslyn? I've just had a terrible thought re Ian's tricky group! He said to 'use your eyes' and asks questions like 'where did you begin?'... Well...where did you begin when you first opened this forum this morning? At the login section, headed 'Welcome, Guest'....Blow's 'Welcome Every Guest'?!! Are they all titles of headings/ sections/ threads?
