Thing is, Mort, during non-rehearsal periods like this my waking day moves rather late on the clock. Getting up at 11 and going to bed at 4 is not unknown. So I was posting about Orval in my pyjamas...

Is that an Orval in your pyjamas or are you just glad to see me?

Love to try that beer - haven't come across it before. Of the 'big name' brands of Belgian beers, I like Duvel, Chimay and Westmalle. Always seem to forget the names of the smaller manufacturers, though! Which other ones would anyone else recommend?

Actually, your question inspires me to amend my earlier post.

I have three favorites.  Add to the list Tripel Karmeliet.  It's very fruity (lots of banana and a kind of silky, vanilla-y texture), w/ a bit of spice, and the most wonderful, thick head I've ever had on any beer.

Their website sucks, but, here you are anyhow:  http://www.bestbelgianspecialbeers.be/main_eng.html

I'm blessed w/ a wonderful bar just down the street called The Hopleaf, which boasts some 40 or so beers on tap (all Belgian and/or North American craft brews), w/ another 250-300 varieties in bottles, depending on the day.  Next time we're both in Chicago, I'll treat you to a drink or two, Ian!

Orval mustn't be too cold I find. When it's just right and has just the right amount of froth then the bitterness of the beer and the texture of the head (the beer's, not mine, although I suppose that too) blend in a really lovely way.

But this is perhaps the wrong time of day for this conversation.  Roll Eyes

In case you got me wrong, Ollie, the shaky head moment wasn't to do with the orval being cold - it was the strong taste.  But tonight I've bought a couple of orvals and a couple of duvels from waitrose to just check....

Oddly, Duvel is 8.5% by vol and yet tastes less strong than the 6.2% Orval  (well, I'll check that as well....)

This often seems to be the case, in my experience.  I tend to find the higher alcohol Belgian beers to be less overtly 'alcohol-y', with a much rounder (?) sweetness and texture.  With the St Bernardus Abt 12 I listed above, for example, there is a really wonderful toffee/chocolate/sweetened coffee flavor, and it's not until I've finished the bottle that I realize that it does indeed carry a 10.5% APV.   Wink

It does the job. If you can direct me towards better marmalade to be found in Köln feel free. The jar is in any case long since empty of marmalade and used for the storage of pine nuts.

Now sipping....
Port.
And had forgotten how much I like it. I think port maybe under-appreciated in the drink world.

Hurrah!

It survived the trip without becoming either undrinkable or hideously expensive! Smiley

Japanese single malt...
It's different and I'm not sure I'll be in a hurry to buy it again but I'm on my second large glass and I'm rather enjoying it.
I'm surrounded by piles of my sketches and stuff watching TV, and feeling this nice warm feeling of general contentment.
It could be the whisky...

A bottle of M&S organic cider, 500 ml. That makes me wonder why beer in cans and bottles was (and still often is) sold in amounts of 440 ml. What's so special about 440 ml? At least 500 ml is close to a pint.

I don't know, Tony, but I believe that FisherMartinJ, when he is next in, is just the man to have the answer.

A Gin and Tonic

Gosh, I needed that.

(Gordon's as it happens, even though I am normally a Blue Sapphire man, myself)

Rocking Roll just hasn't been the same since they stopped brewing it in Latrobe, PA, though. Can you even get this in the UK?
