Rocking Roll just hasn't been the same since they stopped brewing it in Latrobe, PA, though. Can you even get this in the UK?
Even if they could, I wouldn't recommend they drink it. It used to be tolerable (and even occasionally pleasant) if served extremely cold, particularly on a very hot day, but it's turned into fairly standard American pilsner swill in recent years.

Quite. I used to enjoy it with pizza - but only in those circumstances. Beer-times have moved on, and it hasn't I'm afraid. But this reminds me of the great '33' debate! Bottles of RR have that number printed on the label, plus a picture of a horse (out of one of whose orifices it tastes as if it has come). Here's some background, but don't bother. Really. http://www.snopes.com/business/hidden/rolling.asp

Aahh that's better. An unusual ale, quite unlike what I'm used to, but not in a bad way. Extremely hoppy flavour and very satisfying. Very American too.

I have clearly relocated myself into some sort of Appalachian beer ghetto. Why, you guys probably don't even like Miller High Life!
In terms of "highfalutin' beer" (or, as you all might call it, "beer"), I recently had a Flat Earth Belgian-Style Pale Ale, a St. Paul microbrew that I really dug. It was sort of Allagash-esque.
One time I brought a six-pack of Rolling Rock to Chafing Dish's place, and I think he poured it down the drain.

Hey, that's brewed (hm ... I first typed brooed ... I think perhaps I've had one too many at a still early hour!) just down the road a bit. A fine American IPA, I think. Not the best, but very good. If you like that one, stuart, you should see if you can find this: http://www.dogfish.com/brewings/Year_Round_Beers/90_Minute_IPA/11/index.htmIt's quite unique! I just had their 120 minute IPA over the weekend (as a very kind treat from an old friend -- it's $10 for a tiny 12 oz. bottle!) One time I brought a six-pack of Rolling Rock to Chafing Dish's place, and I think he poured it down the drain.
I knew there was a reason I liked Chafers. You're living in a lovely place for beer now, Colin. The Summit beers are always good (though perhaps you could even get those in Chambana?), and there are loads of small/small-ish craft brewers in the area.

Omigod. Dogfish. I LIVED for that stuff a few years ago when I was on a sabbatical. Not that particular brew, but the brand is superb generally. <sigh>

Well, good to know I'm giving it up to come drink flat, room temperature beer. Kidding, kidding. I actually love the stuff. But I have a sense I'm going to go through American Hoppy Ale withdrawal over the next several months. I'll have to find someone in the UK who imports American beer & can ship to Huddersfield. There are a few good selections at the Head of Steam, if I remember right, but ... it won't quite be the same. (I'm realizing I'm going to have to relearn how to use commas in my new environs. (I'm now set up w/ grammar check for UK English, and half my sentences have green squiggly lines under them!))

Hmm, looks like you might also have to relearn how to use beer in your new environs too! Seriously, as far as I can gather you're going to be in Yorkshire. You won't have the chance to miss American beer for several months at least, no matter how good it is! (By the way, I just lived in Bamberg, "Bavaria's beer city" for a year. 70,000 people and 200 varieties of incredible beer - God I miss it!)

I imagine that'll keep me busy for awhile. And when I get tired of the real ales, they carry the St Bernardus Abt 12, which is one of my favorite Belgian beers, and then they have a smattering of American ales as well. Fun fun.

Well but you didn't actually witness that. What actually happened was I gave it away to someone (surely undeserving of such punishment). At the risk of a libel suit, or is it slander?, that's a truly awful beer. No redeeming qualities, not even strength. It's like rolling a bunch of rocks around on your face.

I'll come visit you in the summer, when it's a whopping 3 degrees warmer in Cologne, if you'll promise to come swim the Huddersfield canal in January. Twit. Teach you to argue with me. I've got The Google.

Hmm, yes, pretty good. Except for their 'lagers' selection which is worse than pedestrian. Stella? Grolsch? US BUDWEISER??? At least there's Czech Budvar, a very fine beer. Still, lagers aren't quite your thing are thet, AC?
