offbeat, just copy the url in the 'address' bar at the top of your screen, then paste it into the message.

(That's ctrl-c, then ctrl-v on a PC) Easy-peasy!

Hi Offbeat

Under your avatar at the top of the page, where the line is that says
Home  Help  Search  Profile  My Messages  Calendar  Members  Logout

if you click on the word "Help" you can learn all kinds of useful things like how, if you click on the URL button (third from left, second row) while replying to a message, you can insert a URL (web link). It will look a bit like this (just without the spaces):

[ url ] take me to your readle [ /url ]

Well, if you change it so that it looks like this (again without the spaces):

[ url=http://www.takemeto.com/ ] read me to your takeler [ /url ]

the text between the bits in square brackets will become a link, no matter what it says, and you can hide the actual link in the first bit inside the square brackets. Is all that making sense? if Yes, you need another drink.

I can see that you identified your clip in a subsequent post, offbeat, but bearing in mind the main tenor of the thread over the past day or so, could I just remind everybody again that it would be a tremendous help if folk were to give some brief description of what they're linking to in the same message.

Thank you

I still don't see why they you tubes couldn't just  be ignored if the person doesn't want to  click on a link... a description is not really necessary. ..... is it?

But I will bow to the rules of the board which I didn't know existed in this case. ( Except that I can't be bothered at the moment anyway.)

No A, that's not the point at all: it's not a case of ignoring links, it's also a question of consideration for other users of the board.

Let us suppose that instead of YouTube links members were posting links to events, but without any details - let's say they just put 'upcoming concert information' as a blue-text clickable link, every time, with no indication of the venue, programme, or performers visible unless the link were followed. Most members would find this very frustrating, since they'd have to spend time opening links (which are much faster loading that YouTube) for all sorts of events which were of no interest to them, or frustratingly unavailable to them geographically in any case. On the other hand, were they to ignore every link, they might well miss something that would have been of interest, simply because the poster couldn't be bothered to describe it. That's a direct analogy. Not everybody here has access to external links at all times in any case, or unlimited time at their disposal to check every one when access is available, and replies subsequent to yours show that others appreciate our request, even if you don't.

There is also the question of inappropriate links: a situation that has already risen on the board. If anyone can just put anything on the board without actually announcing it, it would make it considerably easier for material to be posted which could cause offence or even raise legal ramifications.

You still appear to be labouring the issue because it was your post that happened to be the first that happened to be picked on, and are still continuing even when it's somebody else's, without considering other members' input, or the wider legal implications, whatsoever. Descriptions are both necessary and courteous.

Good morning. I'm not feeling very cheerful, because I have to go to the dentist in about an hour. It's only a scale and polish, but I'm nervous because last time I had this done it affected my jaw badly, and I could only eat squashy foods for weeks. That made me feel about a hundred, or alternatively like a baby, either way very bad for morale.

We'll keep our fingers crossed for you, Mary. (Don't forget to remind the dentist of the side-effects from that last visit.)

Yes all the best Mary.  Here's hoping it was just a one-off.  I had awful problems with my jaw quite at random about 8 years ago and they went away as suddenly as they appeared.  Hopefully the dentist will be able to take some sort of action to avoid it happening again though.
