Not that it matters: at 50 minutes from London Bridge I think it's actually going to be quicker from my particular corner of London than Heathrow usually is.
That's a very good point indeed, tinners, and one I hadn't considered before.  Being in south London like you, I've always discounted Luton as my departure point when travelling, but thinking about it, it's possibly even easier to get to than Gatwick.

Heathrow has the advantage of being on the tube, however, and therefore works out by far the cheapest airport to reach by public transport from pretty much anywhere in London.

That's true, except that being someone who can't help being on the minute after the last minute for everything and who also likes not wasting money but then in the time-pressured panic feels suddenly guilty about that, I always end up running down the road with a heavy bag of clothes in tow (I also don't like suitcases) worrying indecisively about whether I really still have got time to take the tube or whether I shouldn't allow myself a luxury for once and get the Heathrow Express, not that that would be much of a luxury at this point as I'd still have to run to make it to Paddington in time, and anyway would it actually be quicker, and am I not wasting time I could better spend worrying about which is the quickest route to Heathrow (although I suppose the New Cross Gate-Canary Wharf-Green Park option is out now the East London line has gone which only leaves me the London Bridge-Green Park vs. Charing Cross-Victoria options to worry about)? ...

What will I worry about tomorrow morning?!? There only seems to be one possible route. Undecided Undecided Undecided

There's a very regular and convenient shuttle service from Luton Airport Parkway to the ærodrome, tinners: doesn't take many minutes at all.

That would have been before all the surrounding roads were dug up, I think, leading pretty much to gridlock for several hours of the day. (i did that trip almost every week for a year!)

Gatwick is blissfully easy and quick to get to for me, just 15 mins on the train, so I use that wherever possible. Heathrow, on the other hand, probably takes the longest of any - often clocking up 2 hours trying to get there (if I don't take the Heathrow Express, which I almost never do). Luton can be arrived at reasonably easy via a through train, and City Airport isn't too bad. Haven't travelled from Stanstead for ages, so not sure about that (recall it being a pain, not least because simply getting to Liverpool Street from East Croydon requires several changes).

True, although no more than it takes me to get to work!

East Croydon > London Bridge > Bank > Liverpool St
Honor Oak Park > London Bridge > Bank > Bethnal Green

In Köln getting to work takes 15 minutes on the bike. As if by way of compensation, the place I nearly always stay in London is 2 hours from where I work.

Where I stay in London is very convenient for City (but you certainly have to book ahead to get anything preiswert from there and even then it's to Frankfurt or Düsseldorf), pretty good for Gatwick, OK for Heathrow, pretty ordinary for Luton and horrible for Stansted (but isn't almost anywhere?). Where I work is in Uxbridge, so Heathrow is a dream if I fly before or after work - half an hour by bus, costs 90p and stops right outside the music department...

From Brighton, anything other than Gatwick is a bit of a nightmare but City is certainly more civilised than Heathrow - I used to use it a lot when I was doing some work in Basel a couple of years back.  Heathrow is appalling, and the places I need to get to for work tend to be served from there rather than Gatwick, which means a lot of early-morning dashes around the M25.

Fortunately, the project I'm working on at the moment is largely run out of Brussels, which means Eurostar - infinitely preferable to flying  Grin

PW, how's the new St. Pancras (where you presumably get your Eurostar now)? Can't wait to see it! In fact I'll be Eurostarring myself in 3 weeks' time...

It looked pretty nice when I was landed back there from Manchester via Sheffield last Thursday, although I didn't really stop to guck around, given that I was carrying baggage back from Christmas and was surrounded by a fairly hefty crowd of others doing the same.
