There were always storms.
"O tide, that waits for no man, spare our coasts!" (Peter Grimes again, but it's better with the music.)

(Perhaps we should have a weather thread?)
Anyway, they are threatening snow here this afternoon / evening. My colleague said it wasn't looking like it but that was about 2 hours ago and it looks decidedly unpleasant now though. Hope it's not too bad as we planned to go to Leeds tomorrow.

I've just had a text from my son, who's on a boat in Bangkok. He says it's very hot and sticky. Give me storms any day.
Why do the young always go to Thailand?
I've never been to Thailand, Mary, although I'd like to (I think). Has he gone on his own?

Mary 1) It's hot, and beautiful. 2) It's cheap, and as its popularity increases, cheap to get to. 3) The food's very popular here, so they know what they're getting on that score. 4) The culture's just westernized enough to be familiar, yet retaining some exotic unknowns. 5) If they like that sort of thing, certain, er, services and substances are dirt cheap too...

I think the first four are factors (though I'd be surprised if the food is the same as anglicised Thai food). I hope no. 5 isn't!

There were indeed always storms but I've lived here for nearly 19 years in this house and I can vouch for the fact that they're becoming more severe with every year that passes. I accept that there have been many extreme weather changes over the millennia but I do happen to think we've hastened this next one through irresponsble stewardship of the planet. Put it this way - I'm sure we haven't helped stabilise anything.

Good morning all and welcome to Pancake Day! Or, more correctly, Shrove Tuesday. There will be no pancakes at Mort Manor, I know my limitations Happy taste bud memories of the pancakes that my mother used to make. Nowt fancy, just pancakes, a sprinkle sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice. Scrummy!

I'm going to make some for lunch. I may try maple syrup, but nothing beats lemon and sugar, so I'll have to have both . (Not together.)

Gosh blimey, it's jolly cold and foggy out there! <shiver> Instant knee-jerk reaction was "Make soup", so I did. Vegetable soup now simmering on the hob. That's lunch sorted then

I measure the cold by the thickness of the ice on the birds' water - it's unbreakable this morning. Apparently this will be the last really cold night/day.

Cold, foggy and raw here. No frost but the ice from yesterday still hasn't melted. No heating again at work yesterday - boiler packed up again and they had to order a part - so halogen heaters were purchased. It takes the chill off my room but already I am reduced to warming my hands by clutching a mug of soup!! They promised to be here 9.30 today, but just had a phone call - the part has not arrived
