After not sleeping well I woke up feeling rough again.
Mid-breakfast there was a rattle at my letter box (I was hoping it was another Walter Zimmermann CD) and I'm presented with two gentlemen wanting to know if I would like to talk about the Catholic church. Of course I was wondering which church they were from (they didn't say), was quite surprised they were doing door-to-door evangelising, was on one level quite happy to explain that I was a Christian and considered myself a member of the catholic church just not a Roman Catholic, but it just came out as 'No thank you, but I hope that you have a good day' and I went back to my boiling egg (shhh! you weren't going to tell anyone about that!)

I bet they were Jehovah's Witnesses.  They don't like the Catholics in particular because of what they consider their idolatry and worship of graven images - i.e. symbols.  I suppose they could have been Mormons though except that the ones that go from door to door tend to be American.

We also have Jehovah's witnesses here. They are well dressed and well behaved people.

I must confess I had no idea Valery Gergiev was a Jehovah's Witness. Most of them shave more often than he does.

Yes, you are absolutely right about Yehovah's Witnesses being well shaved people.
I don't know why Georgiev can not get into the same habit.
I think he is a good conductor, but I would not run to listen to him perform. It is a mystery to me why some people become so famous.

Also Netrebko is struggling here and I don't like how she sings this particular aria.
Zar's Bride is one of my favourite operas.

I don't know this opera, but I know this aria.

Oh good grief. I was marking an essay yesterday that could have usefully referenced that article...

Fascinating. I am unfamiliar with sarcasm, of course.

I love sarcasm. I am sarcastic a lot of the time. I don't think you noticed though.
I try not to offend people here, but I am sarcastic. (you can ask he who knows).
And I did detect some small amount of sarcasm in Mr Dr Prof Richard Barrett post. I can pretend sometimes that I don't understand too.

She is such a terrible singer. I never liked her (but I am in a specially good mood today, sorry).

This is her too, but much better singing.

Where is this old sentimental Waltz? Where is it?
Now it is winter, snow storms are everywhere, the roads are covered with snow.
Where is this wonderful old time waltz?
