Home made custard, not some Birds packet mix of course?
Alas, Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Vanilla Custard: Made in Somerset from cream infused with vanilla seeds, with natural bourbon vanilla extract from Madagascar. Irresistible. (It says on the carton) Sorry. Hangs head in shame and returns to the kitchen, his secret revealed for all to mock...

Yes, I think there's definitely something in that. We always had dogs, as children, and spent many hours walking in the New Forest, but it's the autumnal walks I remember the best, especially when we went collecting chestnuts, which Mum used to make stuffing at Christmas.

I went back there properly (as opposed to driving through it) for the first time in years only this summer. (Well, it's a photo, even if it's not mine!)

Indeed. We used to love climbing over all the logs in the enclosures, and the smell of bracken and the prospect of seeing deer...

As a change from all this autumn colour, here's a little shop in a side road off Harborne High Street. I've walked past it dozens of times and never noticed it before this afternoon, when I took this shot. How do places like this keep going? (click for large version)

Andy, you've unwittingly chanced upon another passion of mine: I love old shops that aren't part of a chain, and which still look like shops looked when I was a child. You still see quite a few hand-painted signs in the smaller towns hereabouts; signs such as this from Forfar, a town relatively free of the big chains (there's a Boots and a Woolworths and that's it).

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Not sure if this would have been part of your chilhood, Ron; but it's SOOOO Brighton. BTW, that crumble looks fab, IGI - is that actually the one you made?
