MabelJane, her name was Portia Ophelia. I rescued her half frozen from a puddle, about 8 months of age. She was always very tiny, and succumbed at 8 years of age to leukaemia. She was an amazing and fearless acrobat and used to delight in doing gymnastics in that apple tree.
She died February last year, I do miss her very much

On the subject of recommended cameras, this is the latest version of my middle one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PowerShot-S5-Digital-Camera/dp/B000RGM0Q4/ref=sr_1_29/203-5195004-6647130?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1193955755&sr=1-29 it's now gone up to 8 rather than my 5 megs, but retains the 12x optical zoom (it's the optical zoom that's all important: digital zoom is all but useless). There are quite a few pros I know of who use one as their back-up/spare/lightweight model, and whilst it's not dirt cheap, you'll have to spend about twice as much again to better it comprehensively. It uses four AA batteries and SD memory cards, so if you do need emergency replacements any medium-sized supermarket will do. Virtually all of my South African pictures were taken with the earlier version, and a fair number of the Happy Room shots too, and it's had a good deal of use in the 3D project work that I'm involved in at the moment. It rarely lets me down, and even when I force it to push the boundaries of safe shooting, the results are usually pretty good. It doesn't fit into a pocket, quite, but it's really not very big at all. Well worth investigating if it's within your price bracket.

OK, try this one as a replacement for number 3, pretty much the finish line for the Boat Race. Is this the Photo Finish the year both teams sank?

aha! said Pooh in a meaningful way...
You haven't read R.A.Heinlein's "The cat who could walk through walls", obviously. (Assuming Pix is an abbreviation of Pixel).

Thanks for the recommendation, Ron. I've just saved it in my shopping basket for future purchase! I have a Olympus Camedia C-220 ZOOM [2.0MP 3xOptical] which, as I mentioned before, has served me fine as an opening gambit into digital photography, but I think it's time to get something better.

I've been reading the reviews too IGI, I am just nervous about mastering a digital camera and how easy it is then to upload onto the computer. Technophobe that I am! Plus I rather like handling prints rather than viewing on screen all the time. I wish I had my camera with me this morning, typical Autumn day here, the top of the hill in brilliant sunshine at 8am whilst in the valley the most amazing delicate ribbons of mist intertwined into amazing patterns. And the dew on all the cobwebs of course, quite magical.

Uploading images from camera to computer is quite straightforward - the software sort of takes you by the hand and leads you to your photos, really. I also wish I'd taken my camera with me this afternoon, as I strolled into Winchester via the Water Meadows. The leaves have 'turned' a lot more than here (on a Hampshire website), which was taken at the end of October 2005: A truly golden afternoon, bright sunshine and the weekend ahead...

Trees are a favourite subject aren't they Mark? Constantly changing. I have some, not sure what species, that I see from my office window, and their leaves now are positively scarlet and they are next to some which are bright orange. Funny that colours that would normally clash don't when Mother Nature is involved!
Now I've mastered this photo load up thingy I must get my box of photos out and put them on my photobucket.......

I took a camera with me when I went to Birmingham University to hear the Brook Street Band performing Handel and Vivaldi at lunchtime. Took this beforehand - it's a 1722 statue of George I "rescued" from Dublin in 1937 which stands between the main gate to the campus and the Barber Institute. I've shot it several times before but I thought I'd try to get an autumnal version. (click for larger version)

A truly golden afternoon, bright sunshine and the weekend ahead... IGI, you've made me go all gooey. I snogged an early girlfriend for the first time under one of those trees! (Where are you now, Wendy?) You probably know my home town...
