Understanding that you all are very much caught up in the land of accents English, I must ammend my previous post and say that I find a lot to like in a good rough Galway accent.

By 'eck Inky, nowt like a bit of rough Irish is there?   Cheesy  I should know, I married one.
He have much of an accent?  (and, if I might ask, what sort?)

Come on incy - wake up! If he's Irish, of course he has one, and it's IRISH. OK?

Inky,

he was a strange fruit, so to speak.  The result of Jewish Dutch Sephardic marrying into Irish Catholics.  Well, to be sure, to be sure, Oy Vey, as he used to say.  Cheesy

Needless to say, the marriage did not last

John W:

The Cov accent is far more difficult to pin down than Brummy, but it doesn't mean it doesn't exist, any more than the fact that the Luton accent is more difficult to pin down than Cockney (and at least there's one oft-heard voice which is ur-Luton, Ken Livingstone, which means that it's easy to get - and keep - a handle on how it sounds).

Ah, so you need a radio or screen personality from Coventry to study the accent, and pin it down. Not many. On Radio 2 Saturday morning there is old Cov kid Brian Matthew presenting Sound of the 60's, but as I say I seem incapable of detecting the accent if he has one.

On the way back from the Cov footie game I was listening to the local radio phone-in talking about the game we'd just lost. Now, post-football phone-ins, THERE is a place to listen to local accents, and yes Ron you're right of course there ARE Coventry and Warwickshire accents (fans come from a wide area here) and at one point I thought I was listening to one of my neighbours, but it wasn't.

I have two children in their early 20's so they should have local accents, I must start listening to what they say  Cheesy

I love Stanley Unwin John, we were only talking about him the other day... strangely easy to understand but difficult to imitate!!

Ho dear "A".  I, too, like Stanley Unwin but haven't heard anything of him for years.  He was, I suspect, an original and not somebody likely to be imitated.

Stanley Unwin died at the beginning of 2002, aged 90.

Ho and ho "A".  I'm truly sorry I missed you at the "hell hole".  You should have approached me, but, I suppose, it's understandable that you probably felt my green dress might have put you in the shade.  Hope you survived the visit there.  In reality, of course, I don't go there in case a violent shake of distaste causes me to fall over.  I suppose your visit was connected, in some way, with the forthcoming "nupshulls".
Hope that you are both fit and well,
Kindest regards
S'wave

p.s.  Thank you AH for that sad news about Stanley Unwin.  I didn't realise he was quite as old as he was.

I love Stanley Unwin, very difficult to imitate, I've tried to a couple of times on this forum using part-quotes from him and my own additions or even from other fans, not greatly successful, best bits are his original.

That just reminded me that my missus collected a bunch of Carry On films DVDs from newspapers end of last year, and delighted to say her collection includes the one featuring Stanley Unwin, Carry On Regardless. Must plan a romantic night in with a film..... Tongue
