Thanks for the update John - I think I am nearly at the limit of the works I 'know' and should remember.  Apart from tracking down No.5, anything extra I get not really going to be 'Sounds Familiar', more a case of 'Well I can make a good guess at who composed that, and do a search for likely works.......'

Come on everyone - John's done a really good quiz here!  have a go!

Yes, do have a go. I sent my entry in a couple of days ago.

And I responded with a very congratulatory note,
to which I will now add

Ah,

That sounds like IGI has a full set.  I shall pack away my tusk, and return to the corner of ignorance (about answers 1b, 3, 5, and 9b).  Sad

Congrats IGI

Phew, that's a relief John.  Thanks.

And it will mean I may have a chance of popping out to the shops and buying whatever no.1 and no.9 turns out to be.......

Il Grande Inquisitor's entry:

----- BEGIN FORM -----
composer 1.   Purcell
work 1.   Come ye sons of art away - Bid the virtues

composer 2.   Vivaldi
work 2.   L'Estro Armonico - Concerto for 2 violins & cello

composer 3.   Boccherini
work 3.   Fandango from Guitar Quintet G.448

composer 4.   Mendelssohn
work 4.   Octet - 4th movement Presto

composer 5.   Wagner
work 5.   Overture to 'Rienzi'

composer 6.   Saint-Saens
work 6.   Piano Coincerto No.2 III. Presto

composer 7.   Stravinsky
work 7.   Petrushka

composer 8.   Prokofiev
work 8.   Violin Concerto No.1 II. Scherzo

composer 9.   Walton
work 9.   Henry V Suite - Overture

composer 10.   Richard Strauss
work 10.   Oboe Concerto

your name   Il Grande Inquisitor
----- END FORM -----

I'll just add that the Petrushka excerpt is from the 'Dance Of The Coachmen'.

A nice varied playlist for a 'Through The Night' I thought.

If anyone is really keen to know any of the artistes/orchs let me know. But No 1 was from my HMV vinyl ASD 3166 (1976), Norma Burrowes singing with Early Music Consort cond. David Munrow.

What a relief! in so far as the (large number of) ones I got wrong or passed on, ie. nos. 4-9, were actually works I don't know. I suppose I really ought to know Petrushka though.

John,

I appreciate this must take a lot of your time, and for the limited number of answers you may have had, you may not think it is worth it.........

......but I'm really looking forward to the next installment!  (Please? Smiley)

Thanks

Thanks Tommo. I think it took less time than that first quiz I did here Smiley

Quiz 2 was a fairly random selection across the centuries. I'm sure I can rustle up another one, maybe on Sunday morning before anyone else here (at home) gets up.
