Nigel has now `phoned me and assured me, repeatedly, that my problems at the moment are to do with, er, the problems at the moment. He has no idea when these problems may be resolved and "I assure you ma`m, nothing that you do will be working at this moment". I pointed out that, actually, these problems had started ever since I signed up with them and his response was  an  a-w-f-u-l-l-y  l-o-n-g  s-i-l-e-n-c-e. Then he retrieved his script from under the desk and repeated it.  I  pointed out that my experience of their Customer Service had been less than satisfactory and it was unreasonable of Virgin Media to expect customers to pay for a service that they were not receiving.  Repeat of silence.

Mort: "So you unable to help me with this?"

Nigel:  "Yes ma`m".

Mort:  "And you have no idea when this problem will be resolved?".

Nige:  "No, ma`m".

Mort:  "Thank you".  Replaces the receiver and lights a cigarette.

Just another day at the Call Centre then.

I really do have to find another ISP and I am thinking about BT, although they got Milly into a bit of a pickle if I remember rightly.  A girl can only take so many frying pannes and fyres .....

Sounds about right Mort - try Freedom to surf.  We've never had any bother with them (he says, fingers crossed)...

Jonathan, I`ve just checked them. Looks interesting. I`ve scoured the small print but can`t seem to find if I will need a BT line. If so, then I`m scuppered Cry

Mort, I've just been on their web page and it says you need a BT line.  What sort of line do you have then  Huh  Your internet arrangements continue to confuse  Cheesy

Freedom2surf is the trading name of Pipex (who are big) and is a Tiscali company.

Ants, oh bugler!  My bluddy `phone line is with @+//%$£&£  Virgin Media! If I move back to BT it will cost me £124. Unless I don`t want to keep my current `phone number, in which case it will be sixty odd squid. Heavy sigh.

Just a thought, Mort: could you get your Broadband transferred from Virgin (= NTL) cable to Virgin phone-based Bb? Or would that be opening up yet another can of pink wriggleys?

Worth a try, I suppose, Ron. Do any of you Virgins have a contact for this? I am now deeply suspicious of any of the Virgin Media numbers that I have.

I was thinking exactly the same as Ron, Mort.  Just switch packages back, let me have a look for you.

Btw, did you check your OE setup against those that I sent you?

Mort, I know this is of no help to you, but I dumped BT from the house recently. Not only did they fail to transfer the account to me following a request to do so immediately after last January's loss, but they, or their sub-contractors, managed to switch my 'phone line with that of my next door neighbour at a time she was in need of frequent access to the 'phone during a family crisis she was involved in. Not so much as an apology from BT!

I am currently relying on my mobile and Tesco VOIP, but as I already use ntl/Virgin Media cable broadband, (the £25 per moth 8 Meg deal), I am considering going for their £30 a month combined package, (only 2 Meg though). Yes I've had the odd problem with ntl over the years, and yes, their telephone customer help is truly crap, but when my cable modem's PSU failed, they did send out a very friendly and helpful engineer within 48 hours with a replacement cable modem, and without charge. In the meantime I had been able to get the line up and running again by using an alternative PSU, but he reckoned it was best to go with the new one, which, touch wood, has performed well, and with less heat output than the old cable modem and PSU.

I'd consider Sky's package, but that needs a BT line, and I want nothing further to do with them. Come to think of it, only Sky Arts and Paramount Comedy 2 keep me with Sky. Wink

Bryn, my feelings regarding BY coincide with yours.  I would rather stick pins in my eyes than go back to them. Unfortunately, so many other providers are dependent on there being a BT socket in the house even if you don`t want the BT service. They`ve got us by the short and wotsits! Angry

Mort,

Before I get even more  Huh  Huh  it seems if you take the Virgin broadband/phone package your contract with BT is finished.  No going back without handing over the dosh.  I don't know how common this is with other broadband/phone deal providers.

It seems your main problem is the email.  The broadband is working fine, your phones are working.  Perhaps if you went through your settings I am sure Bryn could throw some light on the situation as to whether the problem lies there - I think I remember Bryn solving a problem for me very quickly by unticking a box or something (or it could have possibly been switching it on at the wall  Cheesy )

Anty,

The taking over of the landline connection is part and parcel of virtually every Broadband deal since it became possible to 'unbundle' them at exchanges: the provider receives a cut of the line rental, which helps to pay their costs before, paying the balance to BT.

Well well well. Curiouser and curiouser. The e mails that disappeared on Monday have now reappeared, apart from the two that were left behind on Monday. They`ve now gone (no, I didn`t delete them. They were important).  I `phoned Virgin (spit) Media a short while ago to find out what the  ££ penalty would be if I left them. Miraculously, all of a sudden I wasn`t speaking to Nigel but a very charming and chatty young man called Rupert with a definite Estuary accent. Strange that.  Rupe has now arranged for James, who appears to be some kind of IT God, to call me on Friday morning. "He`s brilliant at this kind of thing. Lots of people have OE problems when they came to us. I just know he can fix it". Really? Lots of people? Hmmm, I wonder why? Surely nothing to do with the inept Customer Service in Mumbai?  No, of course not ....

Anty, I doubt I can help beyond suggesting not using the ntl/Virgin Media web email facility (I have such an account but hardly ever use it as such). Just set up a normal email account using whichever email software suits you best, (have to admit I get by with OE6, despite having Forté Agent installed). In my experience the ntl/Virgin Media web email falls over much more often than the standard email account.

Hope that makes some sort of sense.

Ron, it was to get away from BT that I originally had the ntl cable modem installed a few years ago. At that time the BT line was shared with someone else in the house, so I wanted the Internet connection to be quite separate. It now makes sense for me to get the 'phone via ntl/Virgin Media too, since VOIP is not that reliable a means of verbal communication, and the mobile costs too damned much to use as the main 'phone.

Mort. "Mumbai"? I always get Welsh accents when I call ntl/Virgin Media. More like Abertawe, I think. Have they since moved again?

Funny isn't it, Mort, how no one gives a chuck until you're serious about going elsewhere.... Wink
