213 is Rachmaninov's Cinq Morceaux de fantasie: 1. Elégie in E flat minor.
I can't believe that took so long to identify...there was a phrase there which is reminiscent of one of the piano concertos and I also have what I suspect to be the recording Mr 1780 used in his snatch - Rachmaninov's own Ampico piano roll recording of 1928? Indeed, the Great Man himself. One of my favourite recordings. Tommo

Thanks IGI. 211 is somewhere between the nationalities you have already mentioned......
Tommo
Well, at the time that was somewhere between England and Russia, then you had Romania, now we've had Switzerland..... which is a bit too far south, and a bit too far west (if my geography is any good). Tommo

Ah, the Russian was Mr Sudden's Glinka. So we're looking somewhere around Poland or Germany, then?

Regarding 229, my CD says it's called Zavod, which is Russian for Iron Foundry, apparently. It's a movement from a bigger work called Steel or Fonderie d'acier, written in 1927. It makes me think of Prokofiev's Pas d'Acier.

Puzzle 233 is, off the top of my head, so may be wide of the mark, Janacek's Concertino.
No, no, 233 is the Martinu Concerto for Double String Orchestra, Piano & Timpani.
Bryn, how could you confuse Martinů with Janáček? A certain well-known Janáček authority (NB this rules out myself) would be most disappointed!

It was one of those "damn it, I know that" moments. With the scoring system as amended, you gotta strike fast. As I searched for my recording of the Concertino, it suddenly struck me. That's the Martinu piano and timps concerto. You gotta admit, there's a certain thematic similarity between that piano clip and the shape of the opening piano phrase of the Janacek Concertino.

Yep. It's called lack of originality.

No way can I compete with you tusk polishers, but I am quite proud of the points that Uncle Sydney will award me. And, if it is the Martinu, then it's the double innit?

Could someone remind me what the rules are now. Do I get points for guessing things incorrectly? As a setter, do I get points for leading people down a garden path?
