A first clue for 261:  Polish

Tommo

A further clue:  This work was written in 1862, by a man whose Op.17 won over his future Parents-in-Law.

Tommo

Is 261 Wieniawski's Violin Concerto No. 2?

Hurrah!  The Man from the 18th Century, he say 'Yes!'

Mr 1780

PS  Does that mean I get lots of points?

That's the one, Mr Iron, known as the 2nd Interlude set in Justice Shallow's orchard, accompanied 'by sadly merry pipe and tabor music'.

A first clue for Puzzle 257:  written in 1978 by a man who died in 1998

Tommo

A Further Clue.  Whenever I hear this Russian's name, I feel like saying "Gesundheit!"

Mr 1780

And a further clue.  This man's Concerto Grosso No.4 is also known as his Symphony No.5

Tommo, I suppose 257 must be Schnittke's Third Violin Concerto, is that right?

Back to 273. Its composer, who was in his lifetime known mostly for his operas, conducted the premiere of one of Schoenberg's largest works.

Is 273 Franz Schreker's Vorspiel zu einem Drama?

Oh Member Barrett, you make me a happy (and points-rich) man!

Correct!

Have a tissue, by the way....

273: Schreker it surely is, though I'll plump for the Romantische Suite.

Be afraid! Be very afraid!

No, it's not Carmina Burana.

274 - well is it Orff's Cartuli Carmina then?

[edit - silly misspelling - I meant Catulli Carmina!]

No, that's an incorrect answer, I'm afraid. Time for a second clue - Mme Antheil and Mr Iron are right to go for a German composer, but it's not Orff, and are searching within the correct time frame, the choral piece concerned being composed in between Carmina Burana and Cartuli Carmina.
