I am staggered that nobody has got No.276 yet! SendSpace or Rapidshare

Clue - The composer was best known during his own lifetime as one of the leading orchestral and operatic conductors of the day.

So, Mr Inquisitor was entirely correct about the Schreker, which came from a Chandos CD conducted by Sinaisky.

The Vorspiel was for me by far the most memorable item on the disc in question, and as a result I acquired the DVD of Die Gezeichneten, not entirely sure what to make of the production, but the music is very impressive. I always used to think of Schreker's music as a kind of emanation of the Strauss of Salome (which indeed wouldn't in itself be bad), but there's something more individual about it than that, plus the orchestration heads in the overloaded direction of Gurrelieder (which was the Schoenberg piece Schreker premiered).

That's all my snatches gone now. Time to get ripping again...

Oh - just heard this one, which of course is Mahler's Third Symphony.

Of course!! Well spotted, Mr Barrett.  Cheesy

There was a considerable degree of discussion after the Mahler 3 Proms performance last season about those oboe glissandi (the recording used in the snatch was also Abbado, this time with the BPO).

Sadly it's something which is just going to intensely annoy you, Mr 1780, as it is not Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel.   Cheesy

In that case I'm going to take a wild stab at no 280 as Sibelius's Pelléas et Mélisande (although I'm not convinced I've actually got the right language for the title).

And you'd be entirely correct, Mr Now, in terms of composition and language! It is indeed Sibelius' Pelléas and Mélisande, op.46, the movement titled Mélisande at the Spinning Wheel.
