I've just phoned my friend who lives below the landslide.  He says apart from the landslide there was also a flash flood which swept through the back doors and out of the front doors of the cottages but also a shed which housed two goats was swept away, goats and all  Cry  He hasn't heard what their fate was.

That looks terrible Anna, I am glad you are ok though.  Hope your friends goats turn up safe and sound as well.

Arthurs seat, that brings back memories of geological fieldwork trips to Edinburgh and also a holiday there about 10 years ago.  Must go again and climb it again!

I take it that Johannes was on guard on the roof as usual?  Perhaps he saw where the other goats swam off to from his vantage point?

Perhaps this should be the r3ok field trip for this year! (unless we're all off to Armenia...)

Don't know what happened to the goats Milly, they did not belong to my friend, he was just telling me about what happened up the road from him.  Will know more tomorrow.  I hope they did not drown.  It's all been pretty awful but is calm now and to be honest Morpeth and other areas have had it worse.

Overcast, very still and quiet here. It would fair to say that the sky is 'brooding' (why does that word always make me think of Gordon Brown?)

Very dull here, too, though no rain as yet: mind you, yesterday started off dull too, then turned sunny and surprisingly warm later.

I have often wondered, watching the endless "weather forecasts" given by people whose body language clearly indicates that they have not the foggiest idea of what the weather will do(!), from where they get all their creative ideas. (And, goodness me, don't they always manage to imply that such ideas and fantasies are arrived at objectively.)

Well I now know - they look entirely to THIS THREAD. If they want to know what's happening in London, they see what Mort has written; if they need to find anything to say about Scotland they will obviously scrutinise this thread to see what (if anything) Ron happens to have said; and for really "remote" regions (like, say, Hampshire) they will just hope that IGI has made an appearance.

They don't have too much trouble with the south coast - they just look to see what martle has been commenting upon. BUT...they might just have a problem with the East Midlands - John W seems to have "died" and consequently one of their primary sources of information has dried up.

Still (looking to reality) that is more than can be said of the actual weather that seems in reality to be present virtually everywhere on this island.

Have these weather geeks never heard of Microsoft Vista one wonders?

Well, Baz, many of their creative ideas are gained from sources such as this, from earlier this morning:

Now you see, given that they have such marvellous technology available, it never ceases to astonish me just how often they fail spectacularly to tell me accurately what the weather is right now.  A week or so ago I went home to paint the back door, promised sunshine, and clearly remember swearing at the forecast which still showed glorious sunshine right now, while wrestling the wind to tape bubble wrap across the doorframe, and getting battered with heavy rain.

There's no need to be astonished Ruby - these images are made available in order only to make people believe that the forecasters know what they are talking about (it is only the belief that matters!). In reality they tell nothing at all about why the weather is how it is, or how (in view of what it is) it will develop and change.

It is no different really from forecasting an election outcome on the basis of Opinion Polls - it's all pure guesswork dressed up to make us merely believe that they have any idea at all about what they are talking.
