A lovely, warm, sunny day here in Brum today - but the weather was so horrible yesterday that I couldn't find a cricket match that was on, everywhere was still too wet. Still very nice sitting at Harborne's ground though and I was able to amuse myself getting to know the new mobile phone I bought this morning.

The sun's gone away and it's gone rather cold. Looks like summer's back then...

The sun's gone away and it's gone rather cold. Looks like summer's back then... It was VERY cold last night and today has been grey and hazy, as if the weather is sulking, and it is becoming very Autumnal with heavy dews in the morning and totally dark by 8.00pm

I quite like the Autumn... The cosy evenings... hurrying to evensong in the dark... cobwebs laden with dew while you're walking to school...

It's beautiful weather here again. It was the same yesterday. Slowly the tortoise is ambling around the garden. I was told on Monday when he arrived for his holiday that he was "close to hibernation and hardly eating at all." Wrong! He immediately developed a new lease of life when he arrived. He's eating enough for 3 and galumphing around the garden at top speed. The dog is most put out and doesn't know what to think of this apparently walking hamburger, so I can't let them out both at the same time. It's Slowly's turn at the moment.

They think they're walking stones, don't they? Would the dog eat it if they were out together? That wouldn't be easy. Lovely day here, too

Lovely day here, too He wouldn't be able to bite or eat it Mary, it would just retreat into its shell, but he may be able to flip it over with his paws and if it lands on its back it won't be able to get up again. His owner says they can only live for an hour upside down because their breathing becomes restricted.......well as I know nothing about them I'll have to take her word for it. So I daren't leave them both out together just in case. I've just got back from having lunch with my best mate and I left Slowly out. I took the risk because today is HOT! It was a risk though because I have a low ornamental wall which he can climb up with his front feet. If he tipped over backwards he'd be in a pickle till I got back. Anyway, we've just been out and he's survived and is ambling around looking very happy in his own inimitable reptilian way.

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about the problems of being an upside-down tortoise. I don't know whether it's true or not, but it is with sheep.
I used to love my childhood pet tortoise dearly. He was called Dr Coppelius.

I can tell you now for definite Mary it is true! I just heard an almight furore going on in the garden and dashed out to find the child squealing, the dog running round in circles and the tortoise on its back. He'd climbed up on to the rockery into my wild bit of garden which I keep for butterflies etc., which has among other stuff, stinging nettles. The child had dashed in to rescue the tortoise, not realising there were nettles, so he's badly stung on his legs. The tortoise had made its way to safety but the dog HAD then gone for it and flipped it over on to its back. It definitely would never have got up on its own, its little legs were flailing wildly but there would have been no strength to actually turn back over. I didn't know what to do first! I grabbed the dog and pushed him out of the way, pulled up some dock leaves for the child and he then picked up the tortoise and brought it back out on to the lawn. The dog is now in the house in disgrace, the child is sitting on the wall rubbing his legs with dock leaves and the tortoise is once again walking briskly round the garden and as far as I can tell, seems none the worse for his experience. How could you tell if a tortoise was traumatised? That's an example of what can happen if I turn my back to load up the washing machine!

Gloomy, dull and cloudy so far. We've had two brilliant days up to now. Let's hope the day gets better as it goes along. Tortoise survived yesterday's adventure, but I'm not putting him outside until I know for sure it isn't going to rain. He's going home tomorrow, so I'd like him to be alive!

It's a beautiful, bright Autumnal morning. The light is lovely, the air feels clean and there's just enough of a chill to remind us of what's around the corner. All in all this makes for a happy morning

Wednesday was nice-ish, but yesterday was gloomy, damp and dull. Today looks to be set very much along the same lines. Heigh ho.....
