I've just written a big long 'tune'. I don't even know if it's a good one, but these things don't happen very often chéz MacRae, you know! (one of my nicknames at college was 'tuneless b*****d'!)

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

I`ve had a lovely day in a kind of quiet, ambling, spontaneous way. I got an unexpected `phone call to meet up for a late breakfast with friends from work. Yummy sausages and really good toast made with really good bread. We then decided to go and visit an ex-patient who has moved to a care home. We went out for afternoon tea in a nearby park. The sun was sunning, there was beautiful Autumnal light and I had the most fantabuloso rum and raisin ice cream. Yummeeee! I am now a contented bunny

Excellent news. Does this mean that they'll choose the cover to relate to it?
incre: no, their covers tend to look a bit like this: Not really much scope for article-related covers. But it'll have my name quite high up on it, which is nice. And it might even encourage me to get round to offering them another article soon ... I've just written a big long 'tune'. I don't even know if it's a good one, but these things don't happen very often chéz MacRae, you know! (one of my nicknames at college was 'tuneless b*****d'!) Stuart, I believe the subject of my magazine article once said to you (in Aldeburgh?), 'Oh, your music's so tuneless [or something along those lines], why don't you try listening to some Poulenc?' Can't remember who told me that story so apologies if it's untrue. Oh, and Kitty, don't be naughty!

Care to give your old compatriot a less on forty-eleven? I think that the only one I ever wrote was in the first movement of my string quintet of many years ago and, when it finally got played, the first violinist said that the only time I ever wrote a tune I gave it to the viola... Best, Alistair

Can't remember who told me that story so apologies if it's untrue. Hehehe, I can't honestly remember that but that doesn't mean it never happened! Was that Sir RRB by any chance...? I do remember contradicting him in front of the class when he criticised another friend's music for being 'ungrateful' for the musicians to play I certainly haven't seen any point in listening to any Poulenc since then, anyway. I got much better advice from Magnus Lindberg who told me to get to know some more Nono, as that was clearly more up my street. So I did. (I hope it was RRB that said that - the more I think about it the more I seem to remember that he and I didn't really hit it off...!)

I'm happy this morning because I have had my loo fixed (see earlier posts on the Grumpy Old Rant thread) by a very lovely plumber who turned up when he said he would, fixed the loo, re-did the sealant where I'd had to peel it off to get into the cistern (it's one of those modern loos where the cistern is built into the wall), was in and out of my flat within the hour, and charged me a very reasonable sum of money for it. Happiness is the availability of basic home comforts. I may however pop back into the G.O.R. thread to bemoan the fact that said lovely plumber is planning to move to France next year

Glad to hear about your loo, Ruth. After basic home comforts, happiness is the internet actually working. I managed to disconnect my Wireless connection this morning, and had to have clandestine phone conversation with son at work while he worked out what stupid Mum had done, and sorted it out for me.
I'm still hoping to hear about Albert Herring.

Albert Herring was excellent. I haven't forgotten that I was going to post a review. I'll do it sometime today You've also just reminded me that I must change my very out-of-date tagline on MSN Messenger, which currently reads "Broadband finally working - hurrah!!" It's been working for months (touch wood)...
